Recipes using Baking Powder

 

Bassbousa is a delicious rich dessert

Ingredients in Bassbousa

  • 4 cups farina
  • 3/4 lb unsalted butter
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • Almonds

To make Bassbousa

  1. Warm the milk; melt the butter very hot.
  2. Stir the butter into the farina.
  3. Stir in the warmed milk
  4. Add the coconut, 1 cup sugar and the baking powder and mix well.
  5. Butter a large (9" x 13") Pyrex baking dish and spread the mixture in it evenly.
  6. Cut into small squares and place an almond on each square.
  7. Set aside for 30 minutes.
  8. Meanwhile, make a syrup by dissolving 3 cups of sugar in boiling water and stirring constantly. Add the lemon juice and boil for 1 minute; then set aside to cool.
  9. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  10. Bake Bassbousa for approximately 45 minutes or until is is a golden brown color.
  11. When the farina mixture is removed from oven, pour the cooled syrup over top.
  12. Serve when cool.
