Recipe: Brown Bread
- 1 cup rolled oats or oatmeal
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 tbsp yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 2 tsp sugar
- 5 cups flour
- Mix the rolled oats (or oatmeal) with the boiling water, butter, salt and molasses.
- Let stand until lukewarm.
- Dissolve the yeast in the 1/4 cup of lukewarm water along with the 2 tsp sugar. Minx with the oats mix, and let stand 20 minutes.
- Add the flour, a little at a time, and mix well.
- Knead the dough until firm.
- Let rise until double in bulk.
- Cut dough in half, and place each half into a greased loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
- Bake for 1 hour at 350° f
