Recipe: Buttermilk Bread



 

Recipes using Fleischmann's Yeast

 

Buttermilk Bread Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 tbsp sea salt
  • 12 cups unbleached wheat flour

To make Buttermilk Bread

  1. Heat buttermilk and water to lukewarm (about 85° F.). Add sugar and yeast. Stir to dissolve. Let sit for 10 - 15 minutes..
  2. Mix in the canola oil and sea salt. Add flour to make a stiff dough. You may need more or less flour. Knead well.
  3. Put in greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise until double.
  4. Punch down the Buttermilk Bread dough and shape in 5 loaves and put in greased 9x5 bread pans.
  5. Cover the pans with a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled.
  6. Bake 375° F. 30 to 40 minutes or until brown on top.
  7. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack. Brush melted butter on top while still hot. Don't slice until cool.
