Preheat oven to 350°F.
Cream together the butter and sugar
Mix egg in milk, then add to the creamed sugar.
Add vanilla; Beat well.
Add flour, baking powder, and salt; Mix well.
Roll batter into small balls, then dip in the coconut. Top with cherry if desired.
Place on a greased cookie sheet, and bake until lightly browned, about 8 minutes .
