Question Question about baking powder

I have some baking powder in my cabinet. My mom uses alot of cornstarch so she buys it at Sam's Club, but one day she grabbed the wrong jug & got the big thing of baking powder instead. Well she doesn't use it that much, so we split it. I've had it for just over 10 months now... Well I went to make biscuits the other night because I was craving them but they didn't fluff up like they should have. They looked almost exactly like the blobs of dough I put on the cookie sheet. I have a tendency to over knead my dough so I make drop biscuits, hence the blob-like look.

Well now that you know the back story, here's my question... Is there a way to test the baking powder to see if it's still good without having to bake something? I know my grandma used to add some baking soda to water to see if it was still good, would that work for baking powder too?
