Detox - what do you think?

I've heard a lot of hype about detox diets - and I have a friend who is obsessed with doing "cleanses" - I've read that they're really bad for you, especially for weight-loss. What do you know of them? Good or bad? Do you think there are/know of any safe ones?

I have heard that best way to detox is to drink lots of water. I haven't tried any of them in the past since I have heard that they are not really good for your body. I ususally just drink water.

Everyone I've known that has tried to detox ended up with problems.

Best way to detox your body - water, fresh fruits and fresh veggies for several days - nothing cooked at all - totally fresh - and ask your doctor about it before you do it - he may know something that you don't know and it can harm you.

I don't feel a detox should be done without a doctor's supervision!

I agree with the above poster, that it shouldn't be done without a doctor's supervision. There are those cleansing pills that clean out your intestines, etc, and will even get rid of any worms if you have any. A relative of a friend of mine did that and sure enough; she had had worms. So gross, but I guess it's better for your health to get rid of them. I've heard that approximately 1/3 of humans have them in their intestines. :( I got a bit off topic - sorry!

It's not off topic at all...my friend says she does them because of parasites. IDK - I just think not eating balanced for a whole week seems crazy. She does one with a lot of honey in water with red pepper and doesn't eat for 10 DAYS! CRAZY, right? & I KNOW she's not going to the Dr. about it - she finds everything on-line. I just worry for her.

That does not sound safe one bit. I would worry too. Maybe you could find an article ONLINE about the dangers of trying to detox yourself, and give it to her.

I agree. I know that it is hard to tell people what to do. However, if you have proof to show why, then they might listen adn be more skeptical.

I was just reading an article that had several different foods that help you detox, because they contain vitamin C, stimulate liver activity, and other things. Here are the ones I remember:

- Lemons
- Broccoli
- Fruit
- Garlic
- Sesame seeds
- Green tea

Makes sense to me. That's all healthy food anyway.

My sister (who detoxes and diets a lot) always tells me a lot of people have found lemonade + real maple syrup a good semi meal replacement detox drink.

Here is the link to an article about it from Mayo Clinic

Like a detox bloody mary? Ha!I think some study's show caipscin (or something in them peppers) reduces hunger pangs.

I have never heard of detox diets..what are they all about? What is the purpose of them..do people get sick from them?

Get sick? Possibly, in the instance someone overdoes them. The purpose is, well, to detoxify the body, get rid of the toxin buildup, clean up the intestines, help the liver a bit. And/or lose weight.

This actually works. You just have to add cayenne pepper.

I am on a detox diet right now. I don't think it's unhealthy. I only eat fruits and drink plain water. I'll do this for a week.
