Can Openers

Do you prefer to use a hand held can opener or an electic one. This may sound silly, but I have never been able to use an electric can opener. I cant keep the can on there for some reason. I use a hand held one, but I have a problem with it rusting. Am I not suppose to put it in water to wash it?

Don't feel bad shannone, I can't use an electric can opener either.

I don't usually put mine in the water to wash it, but I do use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe it down good after each use.

Oh I have to use electric I have never had a problem getting the can to stay on

I don't care for the electric ones. They don't really save me any time or effort and they tend to get rusty and they take up space on the counter. I really don't need any more gadgets sitting around on the countertop.

I am glad I am not the only one who dosent like an elecrtic can opener. I have one, but I cant seem to get it to work right. I think I will put it in my next yard sale.

I prefer not to use electrical equipment for such a simple work.
I like handheld .

I prefer the hand held as of 20 years ago when the electric ones kept breaking on me------I look at it as wrist exercise which is important if you play tennis, racquetball, or open pickle jars that others hand to you because they can't. Ha!!

I never thought of it as wrist exercise, expatgirl... but now that I think about it, your right. In my case, it really comes in handy for those sticky jelly jars. Kids sure don't know how to make PB&J sandwiches without getting the jelly everywhere, or at least my daughter doesn't. LOL.

I used to love electric can-openers, but for the past five years, I've found hand can-openers to be fantastic.

Much easier to keep clean, for some reason.

I hate the electric ones too. My mom's hangs under a cabinet and we've learned that I'm not allowed to use it. LOL I always end up dropping the can on the counter below... making a huge mess... and then treking off to the store for a new can of whatever I just wasted.

Pampered Chef

I use a hand held Pampered Chef one...I love it because it makes a smooth edge and that way you dont get cut!

I hate electric can openers; I find them to be a waste of time and counter space as well. I have always prefered hand-held ones.

I like electric canopeners..there is a new one they advertise on the tv.. that you just put onto the can and it moves itself..have you heard of this one?

just a plain old handheld for me. The electric ones are just a waste to me..they don't fit in a drawer and take up precious cabinet space.

I did finally break down and get one with a comfy handle instead of the cheap-o all metal one.

Electric can openers and electric knives are two things I'd just feel plain silly using '~__^

I have a Pampered Chef hand held can opener, and I agree with the above post. It is easy to use, and the edges aren't sharp and jagged like regular can openers. It is one of my favorite Pampered Chef items.

I use the good old Swing-A-Way standard can opener with the plastic (maybe vinal) handles. When I bought it, there was a label that said it was the can opener used on Skylab. So if it's rated for space flight and meets NASA specifications, it's probably ok for me to use opening my canned mushrooms :)

BTW: The Swing-a-way really does a good job opening cans.

My dad gave me a hand can opener when I moved out and it was the best can opener I have ever had. In fact I still have that can opener 20 years later. It just glides along the edge of the can with little effort in turning the the crank. I think electric can openers are great for people with arthritis in their hands.

THe normal can openers still do the trick. But i must say, jagged edges are scary.
