Clay Pot/Oven with Handles

Hi:

I just purchased a double sided Clay Pot or Oven which has handles! The handles look like a high impact plastic. I purchased it at an estate sale as I had one similar years ago. This one is printed with the name:

Emperor Kwong-Josh Steak Oven and Made in Taiwan
(all impregnated in the clay)

The one I had before was made in Italy. I used it on top of the stove, using very low heat and a diffuser after soaking the pot about 30 minutes.

Since this one is new, I am in hopes of not causing it to crack from not knowing how to use it.

Maybe it can be placed in the oven even with these handles?

I tried many things on line and no sites had instructions. One site had one of the exact item with a picture (first pull up on search through Google) but said they did not know how to use it either.

Help! grin

Hi Judith,

Welcome to our forum! I do not know the exact piece of kitchen equipment that you are describing, but I believe with a little common sence you could safely cook in it. I have a tagine (but it does not have the handles) and it is solid clay. I soaked it and then after it dried cured it in the oven by baking it after I put on a fine coating of vegetable oil. I would only cook with it on the stove top with a diffuser if you have one.

It would be hard to tell if the handles were oven proof! So until you use it stove top and see how it does, then you may want to experiement with it in the oven (I would not exceed 350° in the oven). I hope it turns out that you like it and can use it often, cooking in clay is wonderful!

Keep coming back to our forum, Cathy

Thanks very much! Had not thought of "seasoning" it but that sounds like a great idea.

Many thanks for your quick reply!!! Judith
