Cheese Grater

I am looking for a cheese grater that wont break. I keep buying those long ones that have teh three different graters. I have heard that the square looking ones are much better. Does anyone have a suggestion on what type of grater to purchase.

I like the 4-sided because of its durability. I also have hand-held graters and the ones that fit over a bowl to catch the gratings, etc. When I am in a hurry and I don't have much to grate its the hand-held, for more grating it's the 4-sided and for a heckuva lot of grating it's one of the grating gizmos I have. But the 4-sided is something that I have always had (before I got my gizmos) and it is just very dependable!

I had never heard of the four sided graters, but I may have to look into them. I always use a handheld, it get the job done for me, and is easier to clean. Plus I have yet to break one.

I have a cheese grater that has different sizes of blades. They look like the ones they use at the restaurants. I also have every kind available in the market. I bought everyone until I found this one and I will not be without this one ever again. It is easy to clean but just make sure you go with the blades not against them. You can just stick it in the dish washer and wash it with the dishes. It comes out clean.

We've always used the 4 sided one & it's never broken...and all the diff. blades make it very versatile

The 4-sided things give me a heckuva old skooling fun time but sometimes I cheat and use those spin-a-grater things they sell on QVC.

I love the four sided grater! That's the kind we had growing up. When I got married, I had a few different kinds; not of which I liked. Then, one day I was at a garage sale and saw a 4-sided one; exactly like the one my mother always had; I snatched it up! I just love it.

Mine looks like one of these, vintagy :

But you can also buy a newer one like this:

I own 2 graters and they are both 4 sided graters. They are easy to hold while you are grating since they sit flat and they have a big handle on top to hold on to. I have always had a 4 sided grater and have never had one break on me. They also can hold lots of grated cheese inside of the grater as you grate the cheese. They are so versatile to use for all type of grating that you made need to do such as fine grating lemon or orange peel to large grating such as potatoes. I find that a block of cheese grated when you need some cheese is much fresher than the grated cheese you can buy the bag. Of course in a pinch the bag stuff works find.

I was stupid - and I knew it when I did this- I just had that feeling - but I did this anyway - I found an 8-sided grater in a discount store so I bought it. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

You don't need 8 sides - the 4 are just fine. And try to grate anything on it and it bends! It's a joke!

Hello Mr. Garbage Truck driver - have I got something for you!!!!

I don't believe I have ever seen an eight sided grater. What in the world would possess someone to make one with eight sides. I just have to know ... does or should I say did it stand up like the 4 sided ones? Were all the sides a different type of grate type?

I had never seen one either - it is eight-sided and much more flimsy than the four-sided. It has different size grates on it - and they were not very noticeable either! And - it doesn't grate as well as the four-sided one. Size-wise it's a bit shorter and has a slant to it (which makes it more dangerous with that much of a slant) because of all the sides which are smaller than a four-sided - sort of "skirted" or "flared" a bit. The cheese stuck to it more and just didn't grate well at all. Take the four-sided and make 2 of each side but smaller than the four-sided and then smaller than that. Sort of hard to put into words - but easy for me to say - IT'S NO GOOD! LOL

Mama, thank you for the very detailed description of that odd 8 sided grater. I would have to agree that the best place for one is at someone else's kitchen. LOL
