and just when you thought fishing was safe . . .

You must be a red-neck if..............

You never knew Gar Eggs were toxic! Good Lord who the heck does know that:confused:
I must be a red-neck cause I never knew that!!!!c>>>But then again I never ate Gar, never will that I know of, and could care less about eating any type roe: otherwise known as fish eggs! "Them thar fish aeggs just aint my cup o tea Ya all!" :D

janie- gar are a fish that strangely resemble alligators. They have very sharp teeth so when one catches one you usually have to cut your line so as not to even get near them! They are small her in IL. but they can grow to HUGE lengths. Very pre-historic and freaky looking. I don't know who'd wanna even try to eat one- let alone harvest their eggs! Ick.

as Kevin rounds up the Gars for a big bash tonight...................
gar on GARlic toast for appetizers
chilled gar soup with GARlic croutons
bbq'd GARlic studded gar fillets.................and the list goes on.........

I will pass on any type of roe. I've had caviar once in Chicago and it tasted like spoiled fish each time one of those little bubbles would pop. Yuk.

Yuck! Thanks for clearing that up for me Kev. Now Im going to have to Google them so I can see a pic lol.

Down in the Florida Everglades Gar grow to enormous proportions, and the are really called Alligator Gar. The Miccosukee and Seminole Indians catch them by a gig tied to the end of a long pole that has a rope attached to it, once they spear a Gar and pull it in they prepare the meat by drying it. In all the Indian Villages you can see Gar meat haning from the front porches of their homes, or their Chickees (what their traditional huts are called). I never got up the nerve to taste it.

OK guys. Lets start posting your favorite Alligator Gar recipes. Cathy, you're first. I think I will just hang out and watch.

Alligator Gar Nuggets

6 large strips of alligator gar meat
a steel cookie cutter
corn meal
salt and pepper
cyan pepper
peanut oil
tarter sauce
jalapeno pepper
milk

Clean and prepare stips of gar meat. Season with salt, pepper, cyan pepper. Use a steel cookie cutter and cut shapes of your choice. A round cookie cutter works best. Drop the nuggets into milk and cover with corn meal batter.
Heat peanut oil to 350 and drop the nuggets into the oil. When floating the nuggets are ready.

Dig nuggets into tarter sauce with a generous portion of jalapeno peppers and juice added

Stir-Fried Gar

6 pounds gar meat (cut in 3-inch pieces)
1 large onion (chopped)
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon hot sauce
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 cup cooking oil
Salt and pepper

Heat the oil in a large cast iron pan and add fish pieces. Stir lightly until brown. Add onion, and stir until light brown. Add the other ingredients and stir lightly, then mix in 3 cups water. Cover and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes.

Serve over rice.

I have two favs... it's a toss-up! Alligator Gar Ceviche and Alligator Gar Pot-Pie! But then again, the Creamed Alligator Gar on Toast ain't nuthin' to sneeze at!:)

Being from Louisiana I shouldn't be laughing. Our local fish shops advertise catfish, gar and gou all the time. A local fare is called gar balls (quit snickering Mama it's a real dish) and is made with rice and fried. Of course the deap south is noted for odd dishes and I think the late newsman Paul Harvey once stated that 60% of all turnip greens are eaten by Democrates. The rest is thown out. :D

thrown out or thrown up??

certain "male parts" of many animals are enjoyed as delicacies by many - no thanks fellas - not inerested

I'm so glad I'm a pasta junkie.........................

Gar balls are just ground gar meat with onion, spices and rice and shaped into a ball and fried. No reproductive parts at all.

OOOPS! I do know that some enjoy bull/cow/bison male parts, Germans fry cow udders, etc. -

(as Mama goes to stand in the corner with her red face........)

Well if we did create some form of "seafood mountain oysters" I wouldn't be the one to prepare them. Being raised in the Gulf coast and in Louisiana I have cleaned a lot of fish and other then when some are carrying eggs I can't tell one gender from the next. They all have a single ventral opening just behind the lower spine and if they have some "parts" it's all internal and I can't tell the boys from the girls. Good thing I'm not a fish. I wouldn't know where to start when I got a little "randy".
