Bait and Switch

My husband's Dad has all of these greens coming back up from the stems from last fall in his garden. I don't like to cook the ones like that because they are tough and flavorless in my opinion. Soo... a few weeks ago he asks me to pick some of the greens and cook for Sunday dinner. So I say ok and go out to the garden and chop all of the weeds from my herb patch and kill a little time. Then I go back inside and tell him I got some for dinner.
On the way home I stop by the store and pick up two large cans of Bush's Best whole leaf spinach in the can. I drain them before we leave for his place on Sunday and pop them in a skillet with a little extra virgin olive oil and minced garlic. Season with a little salt and pepper and heat them up for about 15 minutes. I took them to have with the rest of our dinner.

Now here is where it gets funny. He has not stopped talking about how delish those greens were. He also hasnt put together that they were spinach but he didnt have any spinach greens in the garden. We were down there a few days ago and he asked me how long I cooked the greens because he had cooked some he had picked and they didnt quiet turn out as good as mine ;)
Jon was trying not to laugh out loud and bust me.
Personally I dont care from canned greens at all. They are to mushy but evidently that is how he liked them.

How absolutely hilarious, Janie!

Your story is a testament to the school of thought that says part of the art of taking care of folks is to never be beyond tellin' them what they want to hear. Y'know? Ha! :)

It is so funny how he keeps going on about them and is trying to recreate them. It is definitely a case of telling him what he wants to hear. Im not sure Jon won't end up telling on me.

yo baaad! I have to ask,,, does he "hate spinach?"

that would be the real hoot . . .

I have a couple smallish leeks that survived the winter - I'm debating on whether to pull them or see if they bloom this year.

last year a toad took up residence in the garden - he was huge - size of a saucer - guess he ate a lot of bugs in the garden - I don't know if he overwintered in the garden or trundled off somewhere else - we had a couple nice days so I started cleaning up the garden - I'm a little concerned about finding him with the roto-tiller. that would be not so good.

Spinach is his favorite type of greens but he never has any luck growing them. He has tried.

ack. spinach is one of those deceptively easy things to not grow well.

three factors to make it happen:
- cool temps, but strong sunlight
- rich soil - it grows fasts - does not do well in nitrogen poor situations
- slight alkaline soil - in contrast to most vegetables, spinach likes a slightly alkaline condition.

it needs to germinate, grow, git ate fast. not a crop one can spread out over June & July. . . .

The rich soil alone could be doing him in then. He never does anything to replinish the soil.
