Farmer's Market Finally Open

Our farmer's market has finally opened.

Jon's brother was selling green beans, tomatoes and peppers there today. I am planning to check them out in a day or so and see if I can find a couple dozen ears of corn. My father in law has enough tomatoes in his garden right now for he and I. Only got enough cucumbers to make 9 quarts of pickles this year compared to 36 last year. I got 3 pounds french green beans from the garden this morning. I used them to make 2 1/2 quarts refrigerator pickled green beans. They will be a nice kick to salad later. I also want to hit up the markets for several pounds of jalapenos to make my fav bread and butter jalapenos. They are delish on a burger.

I hope the other farmers have done better with their gardens than us. Someone called Jon's brother to reserve 60 dozen ears of corn. I saw an add on out local news where someone was selling sweet corn for $3 a dozen which is a great price. Last year at the FM they were selling $4-$5 a dozen. I don't mind $4 but $5 is high. It was cheaper at the grocery store.

Our garden is just about finished, corn is in the freezer. Wal-Mart had sweetcorn couple week back for $.15 each. Believe it or not it was good corn. I bought a few just because.
Cooking, 3 ears at a time.
Trim, leave in shuck and micro wave for 5 min. peel add what ever you like. Much better than boiled. I freeze by just trimming, leave in the shuck, seal in vacuum bags, just like fresh. CF:)

People around here CF had to put their gardens out so late they have just begun harvesting this past week. We know this one family who had their first two gardens washed off and their third attempt was destroyed by a bad storm a week or so ago. I felt so bad for them. Jon's Mom and stepdad got theirs out early and are pretty much just down to their corn now. She had put up tons of greens beans and tomato juice. She froze zucchini and cabbage. They bought a second freezer because they plan to have a cow butchered for the winter. I wish I could take out the dish washer in our little kitchen and put in a little freezer but the landlord won't go for it even though the dishwasher is busted.

Thank you for the tip about the microwave. I will try it that way as soon as I get some corn.

I too have heard that microwave tip before but have never tried it. Gotta try it now- so many folks seem to prefer it! I'm seeing that beautiful peaches 'n cream corn everywhere... been too busy to be in the kitchen lately but that changes soon. Gonna load-up on corn and tomatoes and all kinds of good summer grub! :)

Kev if we were closer Id keep you loaded on garden stuff all summer.
I took my neighbor a pound and a half of green beans, yukon gold taters, 4 big tomatoes and a bowl of cherry tomatoes. I gave her a zucchini and some fresh basil and chives. She good goodies and I got to visit her little schnauzer.
