Grease Fire

Well I had my first grease fire today.

One of the things on my list to make for my brother was a blooming onion. I used to small of a pan to hold the grease and when I dropped in the onion about 2 tablespoons shot over the side and caught on fire. I grabbed the pot and set it in the sink. Put it out with salt and fired up a burner on the other side of the stove to finish the onion before the grease cooled down much. I of course poured out some of the oil before putting it back on a burner.
I had quiet the little mess to clean up when I was done but the onion came out beautiful. I made him a batch of dipping sauce to go with it. I think it is time to order myself a deep fryer and next time he wants an onion go with onion petals

OMG Janie - I am so glad it was not worse. Thank heaven for quick thinking girl!!!!

Invest in a deep fryer - it's safer.

(sometimes I swear you guys just want to add more white hairs to my head!!!)

I just ordered myself a deep fryer about 15 minutes ago. No more frying like that on the stove for me. That was way to close.

Janie, sure sorry about your fire. Pleased all came out OK.
What kind of fryer did you get and why? I been needing a new one. CF:)

I ordered a Elite Gourmet 3qt Deep Fryer. I had a coupon for $10 off the fryer.
My brother and his wife loved the onion but I told them no more til the fryer comes lol.

My deep fryer is actually outside just because I worry about things like that lol.. Glad it all turned out ok!

With a deep fryer, how long can you keep the oil? Looks like it would use lots of oil just for one cook. I still want one just wondering. CF:)

Yes it used 2 1/2 48oz bottles of veg oil to fill this one to the minimum level. I strained it and reused it the next day. Everytime you reuse it the smoke point is lowered.
I will only use this one for big frying days. Like if I am doing a fish fry with hush puppies, onion rings and or fries. I will use it for frying chicken.
Around here you can get veg oil on sale for around $1.79 but regular price runs around $3
The fact that these keep the heat regulated to the right temp is a big bonus and the oil does not splatter all over like frying on the stove.
