Mother's Day is comin'!

Sis and I spoke this morning and this will be our Mom's first Mother's Day living her "new life" in a new apartment just moments from our homes. So we wanna celebrate "in the neighborhood" somehow. The forecast here is great for the weekend, so we're planning a picnic at nearby Miller Park. The entire park is lovely, and there are foot-paths and an arched stone bridge surrounded by flowering trees and shrubs and a fish pond that Mom particularly likes to watch the ducks/geese/swans at. And nearby is a beautiful historic old pavillion w/ carved posts and beams, cherubs, fawns, squirrels and bunnies and such.

We're gonna plan a cook-out there. I'm taking chicken breasts and shrimp skewers to grill, pimiento cheese spread/crackers and an herbed cottage cheese dip w/ crudite (both recipes from my new "Frank Stitt's Southern Table" cookbook), and smoked-salmon tabbouleh. Sis will bring pea-salad, fresh fruit bowl and blondies.

A FOOD-UNRELATED QUESTION: Mom never wore perfume for years (part of one of her mental illness thangs that would trigger troublesome craziness!) but lately she's mentioned wanting to wear some. My sister's whole family has allergies and none of them use it, so she knows little about it. Can someone suggest an inexpensive, subtle bottle to get her- something nice but simple to ease her into it?

Did you ever think of a fancy bottle of rose water? Buy a fancy bottle and fill it up. Years ago Avon made Sweet Honesty - it was light.

or purchase a very light one and cut it with water so it's not as strong.

Perhaps a health store may have a selection of organic subtle scents that she could tolerate. Look for essential oils as opposed to perfumes. Just an idea.

And pics of the food and pavilion would be nice :D

Our celebration plans changed drastically today- but Mother's Day was still nice. My sis's family ended up attending a softball tournament that they hadn't known was occurring... and since I only got a couple hours sleep after working a couple extra hours, and they weren't due home until after 3:00PM, we knew we'd all be pooped, so we decided to take the eazy way out and pick-up Pizza Hut! Then after planting a few flowering bushes and such in sis's back yard for my Mom (she keeps a tiny garden patch she call "her's" at sis's place) and for sis, we strolled up-town for Opening Day of the season at the Dairy Barn and we all had various ice-cream treats. After several rounds of Chinese Checkers out on the patio as the sun set, I drove Mom back home.

Now, here I sit and guess what? I feel shivery, warm, moist, dry & clammy all at the same time. Yep, you guessed it- I worked all weekend w/ a co-worker who returned a bit too early from a flu absence. Ugh! I'm pumped-up on aspirin and am sucking OJ outta TWO straws to try and nip this thang in the bud and head it off at the pass before it blossoms into full-blown- whatever. Yikes & Yowza! I feel the Contact Cold & Flu tabs kicking-in too... can you say DROWWWWZY? (NIght-Night all!)

Sounds like you all had a great Mom's Day celebration! Sorry you are not feeling well, hope it's a short-lived bug! As a person who has "perfume allergies" I know some good perfumes that will not trigger allergy headaches...one of my favorite is Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia, also Poision and an old Avon favorite of mine is Mezmerize for Women. All these are georgeous scents that last all day and you only need a quick spray at the pulse points. The Poision is expensive, Gardenia next in expense, lastly Mezmerize the cheapest.

Im glad you guys had a relaxing fun Mothers Day.

Well, after a day-and-a-half of laying down, being lazy and "sweating it out" I am feeling better... the fever is gone, I'm not so congested, and the headaches are disappeared. JUST in time to return to work- Ha! I musta drank a bath-tub full of OJ and ate aspirin like they were popcorn! :)
