Pregnancy Restrictions

I had always known that pregnant women needed to really watch the foods they consume- like seafood. But I recently read the they also should never eat lesser-cooked pink meat or even touch raw meat. I guess I can understand the need to limit or eliminate rare meat- but touching raw meat, too? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

I have heard of this Kevin, there can be parasites in under cooked meat as we well know and during pregnancy who in the heck needs parasites!

There is also a well known fact that pregnant women should not handle kitty litter as it may contain the parasite toxoplasmosis which is harmful to the developing fetus. Toxoplasmosis is a parasite the cats get from consuming and ingesting wild rodents that they catch and eat! So it mostly goes without saying that indoors cats that eat only cat food and have no outdoors time probably do not have toxoplasmosis. The best bet would be to have your cat tested if you're pregnant, just in case. You never know if they might find a little field mouse that somehow got inside and kitty took care of it for you!

Another thing that people do not know is to have any bird they purchase tested for psittachosis [spelling???] a disease that is spread by birds feces and then inhaled into our lungs by breathing.

Always have a new puppy or kitten tested for parasites and treated if need be. Make sure you wash your hands very thoroughly after handling any animal.

Cathy is correct Kev...gotta be extra careful to avoid these things that can contaminate.

lol.....are you preggie Kev ? ROFLMAO

just read on another forum a gal was told to stay away from peanut products, they are thinking allergies begin before birth?

this all seems a bit twisted, I so agree with the cat box thing and raw meat as far as spreading pathogens. My kids were born in the 60's and I was a health nut back then, didn't smoke, maybe had four or five glasses of wine during the pregnancy. Was semi vegetarian.
But my doctor was very, very much into breast feeding ( was just coming back into style then). The father and I both had many, many allergies. He said the longer they did not get anthing other than breast milk the better. First son 9lb12oz--a bit of juice at three months, rice cereal at four months. Gained weight at an amazing weight, no allergies.
Living in a state with many cases of fetal alcohol syndrom understand the zero alcohol.
I think in the past children may have had many problems from these other things but they just weren't identified.
Like 100 years ago when people died in their 50's or younger from natural causes? what was it?
Hey, as you were, in the Holiday Spirit,
Nan
