Snow

We got a pretty good snow and its still falling. No cars on the road except plows. Havent even heard a salt truck.
Jon's Daddy's electric must be out because his answering machine isnt picking up and we cannot get him on the phone. I hope he has electric and his phone is just out. Sleet is supposed to hit in like an hour here.

Yeah were doing fine. I have flashlight batteries in case I loose electric and there are plenty of blankets. Jon's fav joke is he can see fine when the electric goes out. He never runs out of the blind jokes.

I know you get the real stuff Mama but 5-6 inches with sleet is a big deal here. Everything grinds to a stop except those who have to be out. My old car slides all over the road in even a little snow. Electric is out in tons of places and so are phones.

Janie - you got what we call a "dusting" of snow. We are still driving on a foot of packed ice and icy ruts - it won't go away. We have snow predicted everyday for the next week. The lake is not frozen - so that means lake effect - and that means SNOW DUMPED ON YOU UNTIL YOU'RE TOTALLY BURIED AND THEN MORE IS DUMPED BECAUSE ALL TREES AND SKYSCRAPERS NEED TO BE BURIED TOO. And to think it's still fall - gosh I wish I had your snow! I do hope it improves for you.

It isnt bad for us. Electric has stayed on and I made sure we had everything we needed when they forcast this mess. Jon's Mom and stepdad and his Dad are all without phone and electric but one has generators and the other uses wood/coal heat so they are ok. I hear a little more traffic outside since the roads have been plowed. The inch of sleet that fell on the snow is what made the roads slick and it hasnt gotten above 22 all day with little sunshine.

just when we thought it was safe to drive on the roads - and things were improving a bit - here it is again - and it is really coming down - lake effect - grrrrr
it started to come down over an hour ago - and we've already got 3 to 4 inches

It's all relative...

I worked at a tiny ski lodge on the Tsaina River in beautiful Thompson Pass just outside of Valdez, Alaska... it wasn't a proper ski season there unless the annual snow-fall reached 300 inches!

Here in central Illinois we've had about what Janie has had- maybe half a dozen inches so far. Some years we see less by this time of the year- sometimes much more. It just all depends. I grew up near here in a ramshackle old uninsulated farm house. We often saw 25 below zero back then (it seems it hardly gets that cold here these days) and when windy out the drafts would blow into the house thru the old ill-fitting windows and cracks in the walls. When it got below zero we actually had to carry our mattresses down the stairs from the second floor and put them on the living room and dining room floors close to our wood-burning stove (we also had a propane furnace) to sleep in some semblance of warmth because it was just TOO COLD upstairs. BBBRRR!

One Thanksgiving when I was chef at the Fairbanks Princess Hotel it got down to 50-below. And the coldest temp I was ever present in on the North Slope was 72 below zero- but in all fairness I was never outside in it- I remained indoors the entire time.

Where are you at in KY? I lived there for 14 years. Now I'm in southeastern Germany. We've gotten a lot of snow earlier than normal here, its raining now, 2nd time in 2 days, after it snowed, will probably snow again in the morning to make things even messier. Hope all your family are ok.

it's been teasing us daily here - the shoveling right now is light - if you keep up with it - and the weatherman predicts tons of snow on either Christmas Eve or Day - we'll see

I live in Carter County KY near the Grayson Lake.

We are supposed to get snow on Sat and Sunday but they have not specified the amount yet.

I lived in Powell County before I left KY, east of Lexington. Beautiful there. Hope you have a mild winter, I'm afraid we are in for lots of snow here in Germany this winter. Happy holidays.
