Spices

I LOVE spices. I put herbs and spices into everything. So since we are in the Spice Place cooking forum I thought maybe this is the place to make a comment about the packaging of a lot of spices. Why do they put those shaker caps on all bottles of spices? The first thing I do when I get a bottle of spices is to pop that sucker off and stick it in the trash. I don't have any recipes where I use just a sprinkling of spices. I use them with gusto! The other day I got a bottle of whole bay leaves and it had a shaker cap..........Ok how am I going to shake whole bay leaves through here????

What spices do you find you use most often? Do you have any unusual ones? I think my most unusual ones are the spices I use for Indian food. fenugreek, asafoetida and nigella seeds. I also have ground annatto seeds

My FIL grows fresh herbs for me in the summer. I dry some of them to use during the cold months. I use alot of herbs and spices. My favorites are garlic, thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, bay, marjoram, tarragon, parsley, cilantro, onion & garlic powder, savory, black peppercorns & herbs de provence.

O.K. now for a serious answer I love spices like you do, and never stick to using small amounts! I can truly say my all-time favorite spice has got to be CINNAMON and the next favorite [flavoring] would have to be Vanilla, I also favor Garlic!!!!!

spices i use in everything black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and a lil sea salt but mainly the first three

I would rather the spice company spent millions of dollars on good spices than on a second assembly machine that would "not" include the shaker portion of the lid. Besides, I reuse many of those jars for shaker uses.

My favorite things are freshly ground pepper, sea salt, minced onion, minced garlic and a good appetite. The rest are in a half of a cupboard waiting to be used.

Actually I don't buy it until I get a recipe that uses it. After that its remembering that I have it so I don't go out and buy more and more and more. I had to develop a visual system.

If I were younger I would develop a spice jar with a built in vacuum pump/seal so I could reseal the jar after each use and extend the life of the spices.

If you use the shaker part then that's great I was wondering how many people actually do? If no one is using them then it would be better to keep the extra plastic out of landfils. I think there is far too much packaging on pretty much everything.

Absolutely too much packaging!!! And getting a kids toy out of all that darned packaging is like a two hour ordeal!!! Plus if it's a Barbie doll by the time you unpackage her 1/2 her hair is messed up and or missing as all the packaging has pulled it out:eek:

Cathy, this is so off the point, but I just noticed you are one post away from 2000:D You go girl!;)

Julie

PS congrats!

Wow what do I win???? Maybe a trip on an overnight Shrimping trip so I can have that great breakfast just once more before I croak:D

Hey MamaM you see this WHATDA I WIN?????

Good thread jfain...

The spices/herbs (either dried or fresh) I find I'm having to replace the most frequently are: ginger-root, parsley, basil, cayenne, cinnamon, dill, thyme, fennel seeds and Old Bay.

(A friend shared his recipe for the most heavenly and simple rice preparation ever a year back- it's just white rice cooked with shredded carrots and ground fennel seeds- and now I'm ADDICTED! Now I go thru fennel seeds like mad!)

Wow that sounds really interesting. I'll have to make a note to try that.

Actually she was very much on point. My point in this thread was a question as much about the packaging as the spices themselves.

Favorite spices, herbs, & seasonings

My favorites:

ground cinnamon
garlic powder
Italian seasoning
freshly-ground black pepper

I get a kick out of those bottles of bay leaves with the shaker tops! there are many uses for those tops - even when crafting.......
but I am convinced that the ones that put a shaker top on the bay leaves are the same ones that DON'T put the plastic tops on the salad dressings! After all - you can always pour too much so you have to buy more - LOL!!!

As far as cooking goes - I don't "shake" spices in my cooking anyway.

First of all - CONGRATS KID!

Now - you have won a reading with the psychic "Mama Knows".....

give me a moment - I have to look into my crystal ball - (excuse me as I turn one of my glass bowls over..)

first - I see in your future - shrimping trips and all the shrimp you want - and a very, very, very long life to enjoy them!

second - I see in your future - you hitting 3000, 4000, it's absolutely incredible!!!

third - I see you having a wonderful holiday season - filled with love, peace and happiness.

fourth - I have to stop my "seeing" - I need the bowl to mix my meatloaf......

(gotta love me.......)

speaking of spices............has anyone ever seen those tiny little 99-cent spices they sell around the holidays - barely enough for a recipe! (rip-off)
