The Flu

Have all of you avoided getting it?
They have closed several schools around here because of a bad flu outbreak.
My sis brought her kids a few days ago and the oldest had come home from school def showing signs of getting it. Poor kid has been sick for days now. I used a lot of lysol spray while they were here
She has missed three days of school now but is finally getting a bit better.
So far Jon and I have not gotten it and I would like to keep it that way. Between that and a stomach bug going around it has been bad here. Last time Jon was at PT the employees were talking about how the stomach flu had gone through every one of them. As soon as Jon and I got in the car I used to antibacterial hand wash and then we washed up good when we got home.
Jon has the worst habit of smoothing out his moustache all the time when we are out. Not a good habit during flu season.

Here there are several whacko strains of various things going 'round. Many at work have been out w/ bronchitis- 1 even w/ pneumonia. I fibbed last weekend and told a friend I was sick to get out of attending a thingie with a couple I do not like. I shouldn't have told that fib, cuz the next weekend, sure-enuf, I took sick! Was down for 2 full days/nights and was finally saved by chugging nearly 2 full bottles of Nyquil. Had a severe conjestion issue, headache and constant deep cough- but luckily no stomach or fever issues, this time! Hopefully now I'm all healed and DONE w/ illness for one winter!

My husband just got over a bout of something and several at my work have been sick. Luckily I missed it this time around. Well so far.

I got a flu shot one time years back and it worked. I had the worst case of flu I ever had in my life. Never got another one. We've had a couple strains of it running around here this winter, both laid people out for a week if they got either one. A neighbor got over one and got the other 2 weeks later. Poor gal was miserable. My wife and I have managed to avoid getting either one and actually haven't had any flu for several years.

That's ashame that your flu shot did not protect you. My hubby also gets his flu shot every year and he actually got the flu last winter even though he had his shot. I have only ever had 1 and it worked wonderfully, I was wroking in an Assisted Living Home and we got the shot for free, to protect ourselves and our elderly and frail residents, I never got even a sniffle that entire year! So I found the shot to be very effective that year!

I have not had the shot since, but have had the flu almost every winter, I have been fighting it off twice this winter with sudafed and antihistamines, and staying out of the wicked weather, getting plenty of sleep and eating right! It is hard to shake once you get it, and last year I had to see the Dr. and be put on antibiotics to get over it. I wish I could get the flu shot every year to avoid it, but it is expensive to see the Dr. around here.:(

Funny thing about flu shots, the vaccine is centered on LAST years strains. What comes around this year is mutated into a different strain. Knowing this I tend to question the value of the shots.

I've never heard of using the previous year strain for the next year, which would be illogical since, as you stated, the viruses mutate. But they do spend the better part of the year trying to figure out what the potential strains will be for the coming year (there's a wide variety) and then choose the 3 strains for the vaccine. Even that is now changing.

Choosing Virus Strains for Vaccine

We have had some mega flu outbreaks where we are. You have it for a few weeks, think it has gone. Then bang it is back again! The flu jab hasn't prevented many I know from getting it.....

Rest, fluids and more rest is the only thing that beats it, and staying away from anyone who has the slightest "sniff " or cold....

My little niece requested chicken soup today. She is still pretty sick.
They tried to feed her campbells chicken soup and she wouldnt eat it lol. She wanted her Naney's chicken soup. Her Daddy is coming to get it tomorrow.

Add me to the list. High fever, laryngitis, cough, stuffy nose and chest congestion.
My nieces went to the doctor today. They are both on breathing treatments, cough syrup and antibiotics now. Their Daddy picked up their chicken soup and bread sticks this evening. My sister is very sick. She sounds like donald duck right now.
Jon's Mom has pneumonia in one lung. She is home but on heavy meds and steroids. Winter and flu season are def going out with a bang this year.

Thanks Cathy. I appreciate it.
Now if I can get just get through the computer work Jon has in store for me tonight. We have a computer to fix plus Jon's needs reprogrammed. My brother brought me some antibiotics.

Last night we reached burning up one minute and freezing the next. I over heated so bad I had to change my shirt it was wet. I got up and got on the couch and put a fan to blow on my face cause I was having a hard time breathing. This flu is one bad bug. The aching joints and constant cough suck.

Thank you Kevin. I'd love to be rid of this now. I was up all night last night coughing. Even Nyquil didnt help. Jon's Dad just took Jon to get me some more cough syrup, cough drops and some popcicles. Symptoms get so much worse at night. It is horrible.
My sis's five year old missed 4 days of school last week and just headed back to school this morning. She still has a cough but the doctor said she could go back.
They came by here last Mon and Evelyn had come home from school with it. Sure enough the next morning I had a scratching throat and slight cough for 3-4 days and over the weekend it got mean. When they guy came last Thur and fixed out tub he used spray fiberglass which killed my allergies and opened me up that much more to this. The smell was horrible for three days. These bathrooms have no windows.

So much of the over the counter meds have changed their formulas to get back out onto the shelf. They dont seem to work as well as they did before.

For two days I hear Jon on the phone telling everyone he is not gonna get the flu. He says its "girl" flu cause everyone he knows who has it is female and hes not gonna get it. I told him saying stuff like that he would have it within days.
Sure enough ...Jon starts showing symptoms of having what I did. So I take him to the doctor. He then tells the doc that he got into a lot of dust and what he has is an allergy thing..not a cold. So the doc listens to his chest and since he just started showing signs of being sick his chest sounds clear of course. Going on what Jon says the doc gives him a allergy shot and some prescription allergy pills. No antibiotics or cough syrup. Sooo..for the past four days my husband has done nothing but cough so much he is sore. Neither of us are sleeping. When I was doing that I got up and slept on the couch cause I didnt want to cause us both to loose sleep. I had a bottle of antibiotics my older sis gave me which I took for mine. I tried to tell him mine also started in my head but moved into my chest. I wanted to choke him when he was at the doctors and of course the doctor ignored anything I had to say on it. The guy has been my doctor for longer than Jon but they are lodge brothers and act goofy now. Jon was able to sleep some today but he was snoring so much because of the congestion I could not sleep.
His Mom and Dad are all you better watch him and not let that get into his chest. I took him to the freakin doctor for all the good it did him. What more do they want me to do. I do keep asking him how he is getting along with that "girl" flu. I have had that same cold for two weeks today and still have a lingering cough from it. It has been a long sleepless month

A-w-w-w-w Janie I wish you weren't having such a rough time of it! Poor Jon, he sounds so MACHO, and just afraid to admit he is really sick! I wish you both would hurry along and get better already!

God Speed to ya' both, Cathy

Thanks Hon.
I still have a bit of the cough and stuffy nose. Jon's still pretty sick.
I caught him listening to a book today and took a 2 hour nap in the bed. I tried to sleep in the bed last night and he was snoring so lound I gave up and got on the couch at 4am. I had a hard time getting comfortable on the couch for some reason and only got a couple hours sleep there before Jon got up. It has not been my month lol.

Now the magnolia trees they have on each corner of this building are budding and that always really bothers both of our allergies. Plus dogwoods are blooming and that is one of Jon's worst allergies. I opened all the windows and vacumed in here and let the place air out for about an hour today. I sprayed everything down with antibacterial spray.
