Default Sustainable Seafood Guide - Avoid Farmed Salmon

Did you know that it takes more wild caught salmon to produce farm raised salmon then are produced by the salmon farm?

That seems to me to be absolutely crazy. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium the best choice for Salmon is Alaskan Wild Caught Sockeye and you should avoid any farm raised salmon because of the first sentence. You can find the complete Seafood Watch Guide at Monterey Bay Aquarium: Home Page and here is the specific link to Sustainable Salmon. They also have a printable seafood watch pocket guide you can print for your region and use for making proper seafood choices at the grocers and restaurants you visit.

You are right that is crazy to feed farm raised Salmon the wild Salmon. I have also heard that we send the salmon over to China to be processed and then ship them back to US to be sold in our grocery stores. That is even more insane that we can not clean our own fish here in the US especially with all that has come out in the news lately about products imported from China. Is it any wonder why the Salmon costs so much to purchase - it has been shipped 3 times and then you spend your hard earned gas money to drive to the store to purchase the Salmon.
