4 Cups peeled and sliced apples
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Nutmeg
1/2 tsp. Ginger
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup slightly softened butter
Place the sliced apples in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle with salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger; mix thoroughly. Place sliced apples in a buttered 2 quart baking dish.
In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour and sugar. Add the butter and mix with your hands until crumbly. Don't make the crumbs too big. Keep them around the size of 1/2 split pea because they become hard when baked.
Sprinkle evenly over apples. If you need to spread the crumbs more evenly, don’t use your hands since that tends to mash the mixture together and create large crumbs. Instead, rake it with a fork.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. The top should be a golden color.
Serve warm or cold with vanilla ice cream
This one gets rave reviews every time. The secret to a nice flavored topping is to use actual butter or a butter flavored margarine such as "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter".
