Memorial Day

Memorial Day is this weekend -

so what is every one doing?

Having a BBQ??

Whatcha makin'?????

For us - BBQ chicken, grilled steaks, taters on the grill, salads and desserts. Depending on how hot it gets - if it gets hot here - will depend on what I put in the oven for a dessert.:p

not a thing.

I think Adam's going into work (even though it's a holiday) and then he's going to go car shopping, I guess. Which leaves Jack and I on our own - again.

awww medako - that doesn't mean you can't celebrate!!!

dress the little guy in red, white and blue - pick up a patriotic set of party favors (hats, little flags - which you can use again Flag Day and July 4th) - or get some construction paper and make them - maybe buy him a patriotic baseball cap or T-shirt

make a cake or cupcakes - even an ice cream cake - and decorate it for the holiday - red and blue jello "parfaits" (made in plastic cups) and top with whipped cream or coolwhip for a bit of the red-white-and-blue theme

use some patriotic paper plates and have a party with the baby -
sure he is too young to realize - but you will be starting family traditions that will stay with him for the rest of his (and your) life

grab a bottle of bubbles and let him blow bubbles in the wind, get a little golf club and ball from the dollar store and let him play outdoors with you - if he is walking - teach how to march (it is hysterical when they are little!!)

take some pictures and start a scrap book of the memories - make a "memory box" for each year of his life - get a plastic tote and keep all special memories from each year of his life - first b-day pics, favorite outfits, first holiday outfit, first sneakers, scrap books, favorite toys or teddy bear, etc. As he grows his box may grow to hold first papers from school, report cards, etc. And when he gets married and has his first child - hand him all his memory boxes - you will be starting something now that he will appreciate all his life!

(and I bet daddy gets involved too!)

we might just have to have a party of our own! I might just grill us up some hot dogs (he wouldn't be real good with burgers yet) and spend the whole day playing outside!

I might even hook up the sprinkler and we can play in the "rain". :)

Lets see ... I have a busy weekend planned, work mostly. Since it's warmed up I'm going to put my tomatoes in the ground finally. Maybe I'll have some garden fresh tomatoes by mid-July! And cucumbers and cubanelle peppers. Cubanelle's produce a wonderful crop around here and while you can't stuff them, like you do with bell peppers, they do great in anything where you chop up peppers, like salads, sloppy joes, meatloaf, etc. And cubanelle peppers store better than bells.

I have to finish helping a friend replace the screens on their screened in porch. Last weekend I did two sides and either this afternoon or tomorrow, I'm going to complete the job. Her old screens were simply stapled to the 2 x 4's and then lathe was nailed over top so the screens were never tight and hard to replace. We're putting the Screen-Tight strips on now that we got at Lowes. It's a 1000% improvement, and you roll the screen in with rubber spline which magically tightens up the screen. It was much easier to do then I originally thought. It's a little more price this way, the materials for the 14 x 14' screen room is about $600.00. But the look in nice, there is no maintenance of the plastic finished capping, and a single section of the screen can be replaced.

My last task is to add another hive body on my honey bee colony. I set out an empty hive with a lure in it about 3 weeks ago, and a swarm happened by last Saturday and moved in. A honey bee hive needs at least two full sized hive bodies, so tomorrow sometime between 10 and 2 (when most of the foraging bees are seeking nectar and pollen, I'm smoke it up and place a another hive body on top. I hope there nice friendly bees. Once I had a colony with a bad temperament and they wanted to sting me anytime I got close! I used to have several colonies of bees and tried to produce honey, but it's a lot of work. This hive I'm just going to take care of the honeybees, treat them for the parasites that have wrecked havoc on most wild honey bees, and feed them in the fall so they survive the winter.

Oh, a little leisure activity and frustration on Sunday afternoon with a round of golf. I haven't picked up a golf club since October, and only played a handful of times last year so it's bound to be a not so fun time!

So, that leaves Memorial Day for barbecuing. We'll probably make a barbecued roast beef seasoned with Sesame Oil, Ginger and Garlic.

Old Bay - sounds like you have a full weekend ahead of you!!! So far it looks like we may not have any more frosts - but here we have had frosts well into June that have killed many plants.

We arent doing to much this weekend. Just relaxing and getting some much needed house cleaning done. Hopefully we will be able to finish our grass and garden this weekend as well. The kids will be in the pool all day.

As for food I think we might grill some burgers and some chicken for the adults. Some corn, salad, and maybe just a lite dessert like strawberries and angel food cake.

Well, we might have a slight change of plans. Nothing too exciting, but since we went into the town hubby works tonight to look at a car, he went ahead and went to the office - so he won't have to go in on Monday. It's 10:30pm now and he's still at work (and another hour drive home), but it's worth it for him to be able to be home with us on Monday.

yes it is worth it!

the day has started quiet - but it seems like most of the neighborhood is ready with their fireworks - ugh!

they go too wild around here.........

We're having a fairly traditional get together. It's supposed to rain all day but hopefully that won't put too much of a damper on things.

Hamburgers and hot dogs
Roasted garlic/roasted red pepper dip with pita chips
Fruit tray
Vegetables with dip
Fresh corn salad
Chips, salsa and homemade guacamole
Lemonade pie
Chocolate cupcakes (there will be alot of kids here so I thought that would be fun)

We didn't have a very eventful day. My husband had to work and my dad wanted to take my daughter to camp with him and their family. I didn't feel like going because I had to get some work done around the house. So when my husband got home we went to a steakhouse and then a drive. It was a beautiful day out yesterday! I kind of wish now I went to the camp to spend a couple of days.

it was quiet here - and the weather was very pleasant - seems like most on our street decided to take advantage of trash day tomorrow and our neighbors have loaded the street with unwanted collectibles!

no one cooked out today - and the kids weren't even around to play hockey and basketball - sort of odd for our street

but it was BBQ chicken and salads and pasta, etc.

good food, nice and quiet - just wish there would have been something interesting on the boob tube

It was quiet around here too. It rained the majority of the day, so it made it kinda hard to even get outside for any reason.

My dad came and took the kiddo for a few hours and hubby and I did a little cleaning and then laid around most of the afternoon. Yesterday evening we ran into town so I could get a few things to make cookies and brownies for hubby to take to work (bribe for the guys he works with - he needs help with some big projects this week). And, well, that was pretty much the extent of the excitement. And now it's back to life as usual.

We didn't do anything eventful either. The Dh had to work Saturday but was off the rest of the weekend. We cleaned up alittle bit and took the kids to go bowl a few games. Otherwise it was laying around and doing nothing.

We went camping. It was my husband and 3 yr olds first camping trip. It was great and my hubby wants to go again for 4th of July. We bought an even bigger tent and it should be a little less crowded. Campfire cooking is the best I can't wait!
