Mapiva, very respectfully- you as a dweller in a huge city with terrible crime problems that just seem to always be a bit beyond properly controlling, have an understandable issue with weapons.
But not everyone lives in a huge urban area with such crime and social conflict. I respect your ideas on this and even understand them- afterall, I am able to empathize and see well beyond my own personal experience. But my life experience in the locales where I have chosen to live is very different than yours. My particular thinking is very opposite, from yours. However, regardless of our opposie views, the real main difference is- I don't wish to have my choice on the matter dictate yours- or anyone else's. I can see how you might wish for gun control in your city- but in all of America? I stand by my earlier claim that anyone who lives in many rural areas- especially Alaska- is foolishly wrong to do so without a gun. There's a world of difference between NYC and the remote bush where wildlife abounds- I certainly realize and respect that difference. And I love & celebrate both places. But one would be as goofy to walk the Alaskan willderness or camp at a lakeside cabin, without a gun- as they would be to jog thru Central Park at midnight, topless, wearing diamond rings and pearl necklaces. Ain't much a lipstick tube of pepper-spray can do when on a hiking trail and an 800 lb. grizzly decides its his walk-way and that YOU must yield to his right-away. Sensible practicality is called for- no matter where one finds himself- city or country. Last edited by chubbyalaskagriz; 10-11-2008 at 11:02 PM. |

Kev..you expressed my sentiments very well. We all have different opinions based on locale of where we live.
Also Mapiva...I would never tell you or anyone you could not own a gun or have any of your rights taken away that our forefathers gave us.We all have been a product of our upbringing. Guns are only as dangerous as the criminals that misuse them for wrong reasons and ignorance.I was taught nothing but respect for guns and human life. I respect your views. And ask others to respect mine. |

Our fore fathers also condoned slavery and look how much harm this has caused in the present day world. We have yet to recover from it as a nation. I do not tell anyone how to live their lives. On the contrary I am subject to laws I do not believe in. But no worries for you, the NRA is the most powerful lobby in Washington.
I'm here to talk about food. Surely I don't have to be right winged to do that. |

I don't have any ancestors in this country but I'm very sorry about the way your ancestors were and are still treated. So sorry in fact that I spent Columbus Day in a nearby park with many fellow NYorkers sitting in silent protest against the glorification of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas and the genocide the ensued from that point hence. Mostly we sat to honor the spirit of the Native American Indians lost in that power struggle. I assume you spent the day in a similar manner considering your heritage. It is humbling and horrifying to read accounts of what truly happened in those early days of this nation. This is a big country with big issues. We have 4 different time zones, a million different climates, flat land, mountainous land, frozen land, dessert land, and every type of human need you can imagine. I would never presume that urban needs are the same as rural, but I have plenty of experience living amongst guns. Both here in the US and in Greece and have been raised with the belief that guns are necessary and only as dangerous as the people who carry them. No matter what my upbringing was though I always questioned it and I've always known from a young age that I can't sit side by side with gun folk. I feel the same way about people who litter too.
