"Coughs and sneezes spread diseases", as the old saying goes and that is true of any contagious illness.
As children we are taught, Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze and never in someone’s face. Apart from being a filthy thing to do it is only manners not to cover someone else in saliva and mucus.
Flu (any type) will carry complications, that's the nature of the virus and sadly the nature natural selection, weed out the weak and frail.
Personally,
I find hot natural lemon drinks, 1 glass, sweetened with honey every hour.
Any citrus sweets to encourage natural salivation.
Gargling with soluble aspirin 600mg every six hours. (or paracetamol) but I don't think that paracetamol can hold a candle to aspirin.
Camphorated oil rubbed into chest and back four times a day to help avoid congestion and a little back patting and gentle shaking to shift the 'crud' from the old lungs.
A couple of spots of olbas oil on a tissue to help the thick head.
Keep the air moist to avoid that awful 'crusty' feeling.
Optrex a couple of time a day to stop dry eyes.
At least four cups of strong black coffee a day to help with any build up of fluid.
To state the obvious, light cotton clothing and plenty of pillows. Rest is so important, anyone struggling to work or do anything other than sitting or in bed is asking for trouble.

I got a flu shot once years ago on doctors advice. It worked. I got the worst case of the flu of my life and was down for a week. Never again. I flat refuse to get any kind of flu shot, I don't care who says I should. I've had the flu, a pretty mild case, once in the last 12 years so I see no good reason for it and, honestly, I seriously doubt the efficacy of those vaccines. If the Govt makes it mandatory I'll simply be an outlaw.

Sister's allergies had turned into a nice cold and she had the bad luck to catch a stomach bug on top of it. She was feeling better this morning and able to keep down some food but the five year old daughter has it now.

Those bills they are trying to pass sound like they give them the right to impose martial law. Scary stuff...most of the police in this town are kinda jerks who are quick to have ego trips.

I simply don't know WHAT to believe because we're told that flu vaccines use DEAD virus components and that catching flu from flu vacines is a MYTH.
So? What's the TRUTH?
Also- some say not having the flu often isn't a good thing when it comes to preventing future flu outbreaks, because actually coming down WITH the flu is what builds up our metabolism's immunity AGAINST future flu.
SO? Again... WHAT TO BELEIVE?
I have not had a flu shot in a decade or more. And this year I feel I almost MUST get one.
But again... SO MUCH conflicting info out there...

griz, if flu hasn't been a problem for you over the years don't bother. Frankly, the hype over H1N1 is a crock of kimchee.

Hope everyone is staying healthy!
So far Jon and I have avoided getting sick this year. Swine flu is all over the county we live in now. The doctors are not even testing for it unless you are very ill. Jon and I use hand sanitizer when ever we have been anywhere. I have a bottle of it in my purse and one in the car. Right now that is about the best we can do. Cannot hide in your homes. My sis and her kids have had a bad cold. My sis is still pretty sick but the kids have pretty much recovered. I remember when she was a kid and in school. Everything that was going around at school she would catch and bring home to me. Now her kids are doing the same thing to her.
Im making her a pot of soup tonight. Her hubby is gonna come get it and caramel apples I made for her and the kids tomorrow evening.

So far I'm healthy as a horse, janie. Like you- I hope everyone else is too.
I've been elected to do a Thanksgiving meal at my small place for a large group of friends, so I've started gradually picking items up for the menu. The only thing I dislike is having to make a trip to the market to purchase a car-load of stuff in a single trip and then hauling everything inside. So, last week I picked up stuff for green bean casserole and an orange/cream cheese jello mold. Gradually over the weeks I'll cross another few things off my lengthy list each payday. Hopefully by the week before Thanksgiving all I'll have left to get is any fresh produce needed! Are you all giving any thoughts to the holidays yet- or it it too soon?

I bet your dinner will be cozy and delish! A home be it big or small where the cook is someone like you who prepares the meal with love is the most perfect spot to eat.
I actually envy you when it comes to meal planning. I get overwhelmed and try and make to much to try and appeal to all of the picky eaters in Jons family.
I have been tossing around some ideas for the holidays. I hope Jon's brothers wife does Thansgiving at their house this year like they normally do. Last year she had just had a baby so I made the meal. Jons Dad goes to their house to eat Thanksgiving and I make dinner at home for Jon and I. I usually make lamb, duck, turkey or 2 small cornish hens and some sides and what ever Jon wants for dessert. His Mom will have a Thanksgiving dinner in there somewhere.
My brothers wife will be having her baby a few weeks before Thanksgiving so I will make his turkey and all for him to pick up.
Christmas I do all of the cooking for about 16 people for Jons Dads family dinner.

My brother swears by Vitimin D for the Flu. He never even gets a cold since he started taking it a few years ago. Before that he caught everything in sight. So I started taking V D every day now. I have Asthma and trying to stay away from sick ones. Hard to do. My sister inlaw and her three kids all had the swine flu two weeks ago.I won't be taking the Vaccine....took one one time and made me sooo sick.Hoping for the best.It irritates me to no end when people who are sick cough in your face with no concern.
