Growing Indoor Herbs

I brought in a rosemary bush a fews days ago that has spent its summer in the garden. I put it into a nice fat pot with miracle grow potting soil. I have it on the sink next to a window but just in case it doesnt get enough sun I bought one of those sunlight bulbs and have been using it in the kitchen. For right now it is still warm enough to set it out on the balcony through the day. Anyone ever use those sunlight bulbs before for indoor plants? Have any luck with them? I had a hard time even finding a place here that sold the right kind of bulb. Everyone tried to sell me those heat bulbs for reptiles

I've never used one janie... I don't have much of a green thumb, really. But you're gonna be so lucky to have rosemary all winter long! What a beautiful fragrance to have in your kitchen! What a lucky-duck!

Jon asked me what Im gonna name the rosemary bush cause I give everything nicknames. My car is the Titanic ..cause it is always leaking fliuds from some where. My computer is named Max. Of course the herb bush will be called "Herb"ie lol.

the special "gro bulbs" (Gro-Lux and the like) are of limited use - and the 'full spectrum' qualities deteriorate rapidly - looks the same to the eyeball, but isn't...

warm white fluorescent bulbs are quite adequate and a whole lotta less expensive.

Yes, the "gro bulbs" only have a limited life, but they do the job. I also have an AeroGarden and their bulbs have to be changed with every cycle of new plants.

Fluorescent lights seem to have some success but its not a full spectrum light source so I guess it would depend on the type of plant being grown.

I have a big rosemary plant (bush?) that has been moved inside every winter for about seven or eight years.

We get a lot less sunight than southern states and it does fine next to a window. Doesn't grow a lot in winter but stays healthy (house is quite cool) and provides enough for cooking. As soon as it goes back outside in the early spring, it starts to grow fast.

I have friends in climates where it seldom gets below freezing who leave it outside year around. Think Tuscan latitude?

Howdy Nan- you've been missed! Hope all is well... Heard from Brook a couple days back... How long before you're back up North and back on the "chain-gang"? Will you be done w/ time off and back in the routine of cooking again before too much longer? Say- are you familiar w/ Seattle's Cathy Casey? I got this cookbook a few weeks back- pretty good w/ lots Northwestern yummies!

So far it is doing fine. I havent tried keeping any sort of plant or bush indoors in years.
