Default What is a dash.

I have a lot of older recipies that kept calling for a dash or a pinch, so I looked it up. Apparently a dash and a pinch are the same thing and are equal to about 1/16th of a teaspoon. I hope this helps those of you with some older recipes as well.

That sounds about right. I usually just use an actual pinch; it's close enough.

If a recipe (or my mom) says a dash of something, I usually just give the spice bottle a shake or two, depending on whether it has a shaker top & what size holes are in it. If the bottle doesn't have a shaker top, I tap the side of the bottle gently until how much I want has been added to the food.

I usually 'eyeball' things though, even when I bake.

Yeah, a dash is just a little bit. A shake, a pinch, a 1/16 tsp, maybe two shakes if that's what you like. If it's a liquid, then I'd say a dash is one shake of a bottle with a limiting top, or one or two drops if you need to measure yourself.

lol Paprika, thats how my mom cooks too. If I'm trying a recipe for the first time, I usually stick to the amounts and ingredients listed. If it's good, and just needs a little tweaking, I'll keep the recipe card so I have a reference but I'll change this or that, whatever I think will make it taste better.

dash is a small quantity of anything thrown into or mixed with something else, for example, a dash of salt, a dash of pepper, a dash of cheese, wine dash with water, etc.

Before, I thought dash and pinch are not the same. I used to think that dash is a little more than a pinch. When a recipe says a dash of salt, I sprinkle salt 3 to 4 times. Now I know what dash really means. Thanks.
