    Default Thyroid Problems

Does anyone here know anything about what someone with an over or under-active thyroid can/should eat?

A friend of mine has some condition where his thyroid levels are all over the place. One his symptoms is pretty bad indigestion.

    Any dietary suggestions?

Most thyroid problems need to be control by meds.

I don't think there is a specific diet for anyone with underactive thyroid.

There are certain herbal medicines that should be checked by a pharmasist before taking such as Kelp, or any seaweed preparations, anything with a high concentration of iodiene.

It is easily medically treated, usually one tiny tablet a day, the awkward thing is finding the correct dose. This may take several months to regulate but she/he should be fine without any adverse reactions.

    Wishing her/him well.

Thanks everyone for your input. My friend has thyroiditis - thyroid was overactive, now it's underactive. He isn't on any meds yet because the doctor wants to see if it'll run its couse without treatment. Sounds like a crazy doctor I know.

    Thumbs down

There was no mention of mine which was overactive as far as a diet. Had to have it all removed, not to mention with all of the psychological, mental, etc. many doctors theire after said at least a piece should have been left in place to help with all of the side effects. Was put on different high powered meds which caused mood swings, depression, etc for many years. Finally got it stable and have not had any problems since but did several years before any of the stablelision took affect. I still cannot not gain weight, eat all I want and still at 78 lbs. when I am use to being 95 lbs but that is the least of my worry, it was just the mental part that ate me up.

I have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I was put on Synthroid, it is a very tiny pill I take 1 x daily. I just went in for a follow up and the dosage needed to be slightly adjusted. I will keep you posted as I go along and, hopefully, it will be beneficial to you in some way. Diet was not mentioned in my case

The recommended diet and foods to avoid for overactive and uneractive thyroid are somewhat different. Since his is all over the place, his doctor is the best person to advise him what to eat. His stomach problems might help to guide him. If he eats something that disagrees with him, he should most likely avoid that food. Processed foods are probably bad for all of us.
