I love to slow cook in the winter on my old coal stove. It's an 1880 Prizer Royale and is a real working antique. We just lit the stove for the season this weekend, and haven't cooked on it yet. Once we light it, we keep it going until about Mid to late April, and then clean up the stove so we can keep using it. It's an amazing stove, and is still a work of art after 125 years. It took us a while to learn how to burn the stove right. It has a nice sized oven too.

While the thermometer on the oven goes to 500 F, we don't feel comfortable getting the oven hotter than 350 F. We don't want to hurt the stove, and at 350, believe me, the stove is hot. I can't imagine how hot it would be if the oven were to get to 500.

Our coal stove is great for soups, stews, chowders, anything you'd cook in a slow cooker. I'd guess we make the typical beef soup with beef, carrots, potatoes, onions, and tomatoes more often then other recipes. But being here in the mid-Atlantic, we also like to make Maryland Crab Soup in the winter. We also like New England Clam chowder, and may make it once a season (we only make it once a year mostly because of all of the fat in the heavy whipping cream needed for a good chowder).

When the California Artichokes from the Imperial Valley come to the stores in Feb, we make Lemon-Artichoke Soup. Yum!

even though there's no winter from where i come from.

but on evenings where I enjoy a hot soup would be corn on the cob + carrots + pork ribs... the soup would be light but extremly sweet.

and of cos, some meat to go with the rice.

I have a great recipe for smoked chicken-corn chowder. I'll have to dig it up and post it.

I also saw a great soup on Everyday Italian - Beef/Lentil Stew. It's delicious, and also quite healthy with all the grains.

I usually just make some sort of beef soup, that ends up tasting just like roast. I slice up some beef, throw that with beef stock, cabbage, onions, celery, carrots, and potatoes in the crock pot and let it cook all day. I love it; perfect for a cold day.

I love that exact same thing. I also love homemade chili or chicken noodle soup.

Yes, homemade chili is always good too. I love mine; and it's super easy; I'll post it in case anyone wants to give it a try:
1 lb ground beef (browned)
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can Rotel tomatoes
1 can pinto beans
1 can kidney beans
1 package chili seasoning

Put in crock pot and heat until you are ready to eat it. I like to put diced green onions and shredded cheese on it after I spoon some in my bowl.

Ok. That recipe made me want a bowl of chili. I think I will make homemade chili this weekend.

I like homemade chili, vegetable soup, and clam chowder (the thick creamy bad for you kind). We are actually having clam chowder for supper tonight.

a nice slow cooked soup sounds wonderful right now! We're totally iced in and I would almost kill for a big bag of potatoes for soup. I'm gonna have to look around and see if I can't find a good long cooking soup to put on for tomorrow. Put my crockpot to use!
