Recipe: Hungarian Date Bread
- 1 cup chopped pitted dates
- 1 1/4 cups boiling water
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups white flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup sugar
- Sprinkle baking soda over chopped dates. Add boiling water and set aside.
- Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs, flour, ground cinnamon, and sea salt.
- Combine with date mixture and add vanilla extract.
- Grease and flour a 9x13" pan.
- Sprinkle batter with 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 3/4 cup chocolate chips, and ¼ cup sugar.
- Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350° F.
