Recipe: Rye Bread
Rye Bread Ingredients
- 4 1/2 tsp dry yeast
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 3/4 cup molasses
- 1/3 cup Crisco
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 cups boiling water
- 2 cups rye flour
- 6 to 6 1/2 cups white flour
To make Rye Bread
- Combine the yeast, sugar and lukewarm (85° F) water in a cup, and let sit for 10 - 15 minutes to activate the yeast.
- Mix the molasses, shortening, salt, boiling water in a large mixing bowl, let cool to lukewarm, then add the yeast mixture.
- Add 2 cups rye flour, 3 cups white flour to the mixing bowl and beat well.
- Add 3 1/2 cups white flour and knead well.
- Place the Rye Bread in a large greased bowl, and cover with a cloth.
- Let the Rye Bread dough rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour.
- Shape the Rye Bread dough into 3 loaves and place each loaf in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
- Place in a warm location, cover the loaf pans with a damp cloth and let rise until double in bulk.
- Bake Rye Bread at 325° F. for 1 hour.
- Remove Rye Bread from oven, and immediately remove the loaves from pans and let cool on wire racks before cutting.
- If desired, brush tops of hot Rye Bread with melted butter.
