Recipe: Rye Bread
Rye Bread Ingredients
- 1 1/2 quarts warm water
- 4 1/2 tsp dry yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup sorghum
- 4 cups rye flour
- 12 cups white flour, approximately
To make Rye Bread
- Soften yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes.
- Add sugar, salt and shortening, brown sugar and sorghum.
- Mix well. Add rye flour and mix well.
- Add white flour and knead well by hand to mix.
- Cover, and let rise until double in size, knead lightly again and form loaves. Place tye Rye Bread dough in greased 9x5 loaf pans.
- Cover, and let the Rye Bread rise in the 9x5 pans at least one hour.
- Bake Rye Bread 1 hour at 300° F. Don't use a hotter oven, as rye bread burns easily.
- Depending on size of loaves, this recipe makes about 6 loaves of Rye Bread.
