Recipe: Steak Espanole
- 1 1/2 pound round steak
- 1/8 tsp fresh ground pepper
- 6 oz can tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 bay leaf
- 4 whole cloves
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1/2 green pepper, sliced
- 4 oz can mushrooms, drained
- Preheat oven to 400° F.
- Place steaks in an 8" x 12" baking pan.
- Season steak with pepper.
- Place in oven and bake for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, combine the tomato sauce, bay leaf, cloves, and lemon juice in a small sauce pan. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove steak from oven. Top the steaks with the onion, green pepper, and mushrooms; spread them evenly over the steaks.
- Pour sauce over the steaks.
- Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil. Prick a few holes in top of foil with a toothpick to allow steam to escape.
- Return steaks to ovem and reduce oven temperature to 325° F. Bake for 1 1/2 hours more.
- Serve with brown or white rice.
