Happy Independence Day to My Family of Friends Here at Spice Place!

Happy 4th of July to all! My plans are pretty tame. Will proll'y have ice-cream or root-beer floats, and BLT's or breaded deep-fried pork tenderloin sandwiches w/ Mom at the Miller Park duck pond... ...will drive out in the country to take my Dad to my sister's in the evening for steaks on...

(Tacky? Yeah! :) But at least its timely!) What's the BEST thing you do with Weiners?

I'd hafta say.. Beans & Weenies! Add a teensy touch of mustard and brown sugar to the canned beans, LOTS of weiners and bake in oven a little too long- until there's a crust formed on the baking dish- oh so yummy! And pigs in a blanket! (Eat your heart out, Congressman Anthony Weiner!) :)

What's the BEST thing you do with Blueberries?

Do ya'll have "Aldi's" grocery stores in your necks of the woods? Mine has had beautifui plump blueberries for 99-cents a pint. Last week I picked-up and few pints and had been eating them on everything from yogurt and oatmeal to salads. I went again and got 3 flats for a total of 36 pints...

Not food related, but very sadly, I just read...

...of James Arness' passing. Matt Dillon of TV's 'Gunsmoke' was always a hero to me. A gentle giant, Arness was a humble man with great talent who lived a quiet but full life. My hat is in one hand and a big 'ol bouquet of prairie grass and wildflowers are in the other for ya, Marshall Dillon...

I'm taking a second job (PT) to supplement my income and...

...help jump-start my efforts at getting my cookbook published. Book is still at second publisher and haven't heard a word since just after the holidays- AGH! A new batch of query-letters and book-proposals just went out... Since it's roughly well over a $150 to prepare and package each...

What's the BEST thing you do with Eggs?

I've heard eggs called "the perfect protein". I couldn't agree more! My fav simple omelet is just caramelized onions and Swiss cheese. And if you have no restraint- maybe add mushrooms. ;) I was raised on "egg gravy" which is simply cream gravy w/ lotsa black pepper and instead of adding...

What's the BEST thing you do with Parsley?

An oft-overlooked or disregarded ingredient that seems at best a wall-flower, and at worst an annoyance to the perfect toothy smile... but when used it truly does give ingredients it touches a "lift". What's the best thing YOU do with it? Everyone knows I'm a cheese-ball fiend. I make a dozen...

Lightening-rod for some, ray of light for others...

I've been a fan of Oprah since her local live 9:00AM show here in Illinois went into syndication in the mid-80's. I've tried watching as many episodes as possible in this- her final season, but have missed many. Her Finale Show is tomorrow- Wednesday. This will play a significant part in my...

Tomato Lament: Growing-up in a small farm-town here in the Mid-West...

...of course we had a garden. Always in it was lettuce, peas, radishes, green onions, cukes, zucchini, yellow crook-necked squash, string beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, canteloupe, watermelon- and of course tomatoes. YUM! I remember we used 5-gallon pickle-buckets that I got from the tavern...

    "Secret" Ingredients

I seldom make Mac & Cheese anymore without adding a whole brick of cream cheese torn into bits, and a tablespoon or 2 of basic, cheap yellow hot-dog mustard! try it- I promise- you'll follow suit! :)

    Kentucky Derby

Worked at a country club once that had a big 'ol doin's to celebrate Derby Day- the first Saturday in May. The club always had a huge buffet w/ carved ham, hot browns, mint juleps, derby pie, bourbon bread pudding- the works. And like the Royal Wedding there were foo-foo HATS galore! Is...

Random common mistakes that I've been guilty of needing to correct...

1.) It's best to start all root vegetables in a pot of COLD water- not hot. 2.) Though some here have debated this, I still feel it's best to follow the old wive's tale and not to add salt or tomato product to simmering dry beans until they are cooked to tender- I feel it makes them tough. 3.)...

    Chicken Miss Anna-Louise

Our staff-cook at an Alaskan lodge made this a popular dish w/ the work crew. Take a bunch of raw boneless breasts, dip first into seasoned flour- then whisked eggs. Carefully place in a cast iron skillet w/ deep grease in it. Fry until golden on both sides. (The flour-first/egg-second...

One of my very first posts a few yrs. ago was about S&H Green Stamps...

And I have revived it a few times in an ongoing effort to track down an artifact that I'd give nearly anything to have again today! So here goes... In the late 60's/early 70's Mom used stamps to get a piece of art she hung in our kitchen. It was a 16"X24" (aprox.) resin relief that looked...

So as not to ruffle the feathers of any fans he may have here...

...I will abstain from actually mentioning his name. But to CELEBRATE the departure of a televsion personality from a certain News station who I do not like and consider to be a whacko sensationalist, I am hosting a Food Day at work Friday. There will be a little less trickling drool, flying...

Spring is here and I bring up this topic every year- so just humor me...

CAMPING season will soon arrive! Any fellow outdoorsy types? I grew-up tent-camping at nearby Spring Lake and up at Starved Rock State Forest here in Illinois. We also camped in the Ozarks and all over the West. My fav places out west as a kid were the Tetons and Big Horn Mountains of South...

My Friday Night Canasta Buds and I are putting the cards aside...

...this week and will be watching "Cleopatra" and I'll be cooking as we gather to celebrate Liz's life and her journey home. (One rather foo-foo friend- Carlos- will no doubt arrive wearing fingers full of costume DIAMONDS!) :) The menu? I recall during an interview w/ Donahue years ago Ms...

Not Food Related at all... OLDIES MUSIC!

Not everyone likes country music- and of those who do- many don't like the oldies. But when I was a kid my uncle owned a honky tonk saloon and I remember we went there a lot. Today was Uncle Eldean's birthday and I sent him this e-mail full of You Tube links of many of those fantastic oldies...
