I found this in an old farmhouse kitchen; obviously some kind of kitchen gadget. Anyone know what it is? One person suggested it might be a soft boiled egg scoop, but I can't find anything similar. Can you help? Tommy

"What Is It" Description

It's about 5 inches long, wooden handle, "scoop," about the size of a tablespoon, but thicker, with the two cut-outs. All edges are blunt; looks like the scoop is spot welded to handle bracked which is press fitted to handle.

I wonder if it is some kind of a butter scoop, that they used to sccop butter from the churn and place it into the molds? Just a Wild-Azz-Guess:rolleyes:

Hey Mama don't you know what this thing is???

Kevin, I know you have been into antiques at times and I'll bet you have an idea of what this gadget is!

OK IC you have just got to know!!!!!

Come on guys and gals give it a stab........

hi tommy 1
Seems a strange shape

Like a spoon to fill small Bottles
Or be used for grain
MmMmMm
When learning how to use

Told me

I can't quite make it out - could be for removing pickles/olives from a jar - if the sides are cut off - looking at the very first picture it almost looks like it could "hang" on the side of a jar for filling it
??????????????????
pic is small - wish it was bigger

not knowing how "strong" it is - possible ice cream scoop - can't be a gravy ladle - do the sides turn up - that's what it looks like -
can you make the pic bigger?

got me thinking - could be a scoop - or a butter scoop

are there any names or markings on the scoop or the wood?

the fact that it is "sideways" it has to be some sort of a scoop

(geez make me think..........my poor brain cells - LOL!)

MamaM double click on the images of the "thing" and it will show you a larger image!

Calling CanMan.......Calling CanMan>>>>Do you know what it is??? I sort of have a feeling he will know!

Never seen one before, but looks like either an ice cream or a butter scoop or something of that texture. Looks like the "spoon" is dragged along the surface which causes whatever to curl up on the spoon.

That's my guess.

I don't know- never seen such a tool! But I suspect Cathy and mama may be correct- some sort of butter scoop- or butter curler.

Or maybe something to do w/ those old-time ice blocks. Maybe a gadget to shave ice with for cool drinks? Or some sort of cheese knife?
Hmmm... This is a fun one!

Anyone else?

I checked with an expert collector of ice cream scoops and she had never seen such a thing but did not think it was ice cream related. Also, the edges are much too blunt to shave ice. Tommy

A co-worker says he thinks it looks like a homemade one-of-a-kind gadget, possibly made by welding a spoon to a handle for some unique, specialized purpose.

I checked with an expert collector of ice cream scoops and she has never seen such a thing and did not think it was ice cream related. Also, the edges are much too blunt to shave ice. No markings whatsoever. It is pretty sturdy; scoop is somewhat thick, about 1/8 inch. Seems to be professionally manufactured rather than home made.Tommy

I am pretty convienced it is used in the process of butter making. They used it to scrape the butter from the churn, if my ex-hubby were around I would ask him, his mother made real butter, but well.......I am convienced. I am going to do a on-line search for butther churning and see if I can find it!

It looks like a curved butter paddle, only not solid wood like the one I saw on www.lehmas.com under butter making supplies. Go see if you think it could possibly be that Tommy. I am almost convienced that is what it is. And whoever made it was very smart indeed. Can you imagine how much work it took to churn butter in an old wooden or crock churn? You would most certainly not want 1 little bit go to waste. I think that tool would have done an excellent job scraping the sides and paddles of any butter that would stick to them.

I am not done searching this thing out yet! This is fun and I am going to try and figure it out for sure!

Now tha I looked at it again I think I am totally wrong. I think it is a shoe horn!
