Do you peel your potatoes before boiling them?

I saw the "Fake mashed potato" thread and a question popped in my mind.

If you need to mash some *real* :D potato to make a casserole, and you need to boil the potato first, do you peel and cut the potato into small pieces BEFORE boiling it or you boil it whole and then peel it later?

Assume I DO NOT want any skin in my casserole dish ultimately.

For potato salads, casseroles, homemade macaroni, mashed potatoes, etc. I do peel my potatoes.

When mkaing smashed potatoes or steaming, baking or just boiling potatoes for homefries, etc. I do not peel my potatoes.

I read in a book by Dr Miriam Stoppard that potatoes lose much of their protein, vitamins and minerals if you boil them with the skins off.

Anyways, I saw a Youtube video of how to peel a potato after boiling it with the skin on. I found it quite interesting and thought I'll share here.

I prefer them with the skins on, especially new potatoes or those little fingerling potatoes. MMMM.

I usually peel my potatoes before cooking when I do the cooking. My husband always leaves the skin on - mainly because he hates peeling potatoes.

I like them either way.

It depends on what I'm making as to if I peel my potatoes or not. If I do peel them, though, I peel them BEFORE I boil them. It's much easier that way.

Typically, the only time I ever leave the skins on is when I make mashed potatoes w/ baby reds, or baked potatoes.

I'll peel potatoes for potato salad and that's about all. I leave them on to boil, mash, fry or bake.

Oh, and I peel before I boil if I'm making potato salad. I agree, it's much easier that way.

Whatever is the case, I boil the potato first before peeling them. I don't have a peeler, you see. So I find it hard to peel the skin if it's not boiled beforehand. Boiling it makes the peeling so much easier.

If you don't want skin in your finished product, then you should peel them before cooking.

I usually don't bother; the skins don't hurt anything and add interesting texture actually.

Since we rarely use I guess you could call them brown potatos unless it is for potato salad then yes I peel them. However, we usually eat alot of red potatoes so I don't peel them. Even in mashed potatoes it tastes god with the skin on. My kids even will eat them. I hear that the skin carries alot of vitamins in them not sure if it is true or not.

I believe so too. It is in the potatoes' skin where the vitamins are. Potatoes are starch and minerals without it. I think it's the same with apple--skin = vitamins. I like eating apples' skin. Sometimes I eat that only.

Thanks for sharing the video simcooks. I couldn't understand a word they were saying, but I definately understood the video.
I usually peel my potatoes when I am making mashed potatoes, but boil them with the skins on when I am making potato salad.

I used to peel them, but now that I know that gets rid of many of the nutrients (makes perfect sense now that I think about it), I think I'll leave the peel on.

I almost always peel them but it really is a painful task, I must say, especially when you are cooking for lot of people.
I have heard some people rather scrub their potatoes. I wonder how useful it is and what exactly can be used to scrub potatoes.

you can use a vegetable scrubber on potatoes, or even one of those dish scrubbers (the kind that don't "crumble" apart & leave bits & pieces). Just be sure you ONLY use them for veggies. And rinse the veggies well after scrubbing and before cooking.

I mostly use a vegetable scrubber to scrub them under running water.
Sometimes, I refer boiling them and then peeling them. It makes the task a lot easier that way.

Most of the times I peel the potatoes. When I am making whole jacket potatoes
I leave the peel on after washing it well. I like potatoes without the peel.

Nice video simcooks. I didn't understand what they're saying but I know how to peel the skin now!

I don't like the texture of the skin so I always peel it.
