Popcorn, Fresh Or The Microwavable

The Ironic Chef

New member
I have to ask the question. As far as Popcorn is concerned, do you pop your own or get the stuff for the microwave?

I literally suck at microwaving popcorn. I am guaranteed to burn it and there is one thing a person should not eat is burnt popcorn. All you have to do is burn a few kernels and it ruins the whole batch.
I know, there are settings on microwaves for popcorn, put the bag on a plate, check the power levels, do this, do that. I have tried all those things through the years and I am just hexed as a failure to make popcorn in the microwave. I am not all sure about what exactly goes into that bag of popcorn anyway. I do know that it isn't very healthy and is loaded with things I can't pronounce. It's scary stuff.

I think it all comes down to the fact that I just prefer making popcorn the old fashion way. I think that popcorn cooked on the stove taste a 100 percent better than the microwaveable types. I love fresh popped corn with salt and melted butter. I have made it that way all my life and prefer it that way.

I laugh at myself regarding the microwaveable popcorn. My youngest daughter from the age of 6 could put a bag of popcorn into the microwave and have it come out right. Not me, lol.

I prefer Microwave Popcorn! And I must be a freak of nature but I have always prefered my popcorn to have some scorched (slightly burned) kernels, no matter which way it is prepared! And I love popcorn best from the microwave because it seems to remove the moisture from the the popped corn better! I find the old-fashioned stove top popped corn to be more moist and less crisp, sort of chewier. Just my preferences;) BUT I LOVE POPCORN FROM THE MOVIE THEATRE BEST:p

Cathy, I remember my last episode with movie popcorn. They don't make it fresh here anymore.
For days after wards it was as if I had consumed a bucket of broken glass. I was in such pain, lol.

I would make my popcorn the old fashion way except that my hubby hates popcorn and even the smell of it makes him nauseous. So the only time I can get pop corn is at work. That means microwave. I have been buying the low fat 130 calorie bags from Trader Joe's. The ingredients list is much less scary.

The only popcorn you will find in my house is the good ol' fashioned popcorn you have to pop on the stove. I've got an air-popper and what I call the "flying saucer" (when done popping you invert and the top is a bowl) and of course - that big ol' pan for poppin'!

Real butter on top - no margarine.

Most of the theaters here don't make their popcorn - it comes in those big black plastic garbage bags and they just dump it in the popcorn machine and pour butter over it when you want. YUCK!

I use a air-popper. I'm not a fan of microwave popcorn, although... I Love my microwave. If I want Fast popcorn I will buy a bag before the microwave stuff.

Here is a recipe for: CHILI POPCORN (MAKES 3 QUARTS)
2 t chili powder 1/2 t garlic salt 1/4 t oregano (leaves) (12 cups freshly popped popcorn)
3 T butter or margarine melted. In a small bowl, combine chili powder, garlic salt &oregano.
(PrepTime:10 min.)

Place popped popcorn in Large plastic bag sprinkle with seasoning mixture. Close bag and shake to evenly distribute seasoning. Drizzle butter over popcorn. Immediately close the bag and shake until popcorn is evenly coated. serve and eat at once. I cut this recipe in half. Cookie :)

Discounting the quality of the corn itself, I find no difference in the "method" of popping the corn. They all "pop" the kernel. The difference to me is the oil and flavorings used, during or after the popping.

I love popcorn and will use microwave bags most often because of the convenience and speed, but I stay away from the plain or "healthy" which seem to taste more like the bag.

But I'm forced to be more frugal so I'm working my way back to the more conventional method on the stove top with a crank-style popper. On an electric stove it requires concentration.

We always get the movie theater butter which is loaded with fat so we only have it a couple times a month lol. I like to get the single serving size bags.

I used to drive people crazy when Jon was in college. I took my laptop and a movie and I would sit out in the hall and watch a movie. THEN I noticed alot of the professors had microwaves in their rooms. Soo I started taking a bag of popcorn with me and I would sneak into empty rooms and pop myself a bag to eat while I watched my movie. The smell drove people crazy lol. I made friends with a guy whose girlfried was in the same class as Jon. He was waiting on her so we would watch movies and share popcorn lol. I always got the feeling his girlfriend didnt like me much.
Their professor for the class always used to try to get me to come in an listen to his lecture. He wasnt real subtle about the fact he liked the way I looked. I heard him lecture from the hall. He was a pompous jerk. They couldnt have paid me to sit in there. All of the other professors laughed at him.
There were a couple of chairs out in the hall with a little table in between them. We used to sit my laptop in the middle. We took turns buying the cold drinks and we relaxed with a movie while they had class. We always made sure we were far enough away so the sound didnt disturb anyone. Class was like an hour and fourty five min so I always picked movies that came in under that time.
He had a philosophy class and that professor was super cool. I did sit in on that one and I even took my own notes and Jon got me the books from the book store. She was an awesome teacher. I even started taking snacks for everyone. I would make fudge and get a couple giant bags of chips and the others even started bringing stuff. It was a night class though so you could get away with more lol. She even called on me in class BUT I drew the line when she wanted me to take the tests.

I eat only micro-wave popcorn these days mainly due just to ease and fast convenience.

I do remember fondly Dad poping it on the stove-top Sunday nights, in a big cast iron dutch oven when we were kids. He always loaded the heated oil up w/ garlic-salt before pouring in the kernels. YUM!
