Taste of Flavored Jello

Why is it when you make flavored Jello at home it actually tastes like the flavor you are making (such as orange, cherry, etc.) but when you eat out somewhere that serves flavored Jello it wiggles well and looks pretty but it has no real flavor. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes I have had that experience but have no idea why it tastes so bad. Not sure I wnat to know. LOL

most likely "stretching" their gelatin (which may be an off brand and most off brands have no flavor anyway) with unflavored gelatin and food coloring.................

I agree AEIOU. When I use the Jello-O brand gelatin at home, my homemade Jello always has flavor. When I go to the American Legion or Elks Club, it's just red and wiggly. It must be the brand thing. I suppose that there can't be too much to Jell-O so to cut costs, the off brands cut flavor.

Old Bay - sometimes trying to save a few cents on a product just doesn't work! I try not to use cheaper brands (not that I am rich!) but its the quality and the flavor that can make or break a dish/meal.

I agree with you Mama, there are those items that it is ok to buy off brand but when it comes to making good tasting food I like to stick to the brand names. I suppose those places have tight budgets and therefore buy the off brands as well as trying to get the most out of the item even if it means adding a little more water than what it calls for in the original recipe.

I absolutely agree about the quality of brand products. Except for gas, then I buy the cheapest, usually Sheetz or Wawa. The water in their gas burns just fine in my car :)

OldBay - don't get me started on gasoline! OMG!
cheap is the only way to go - these oil companies are ripping us off and the government is right along side with their dang taxes!
they have dissected the entire gasoline production routine just so they can tax us up the waazoo!
and this ethanol thing - it's a crock!
the last tiem they did this I had to replace my engine and now all of a sudden ethanol is good for all cars - yeah right - I may be blonde but I'm not stupid!

I know this is off topic but:
Ethanol is used in the auto-racing industry.

But for what's happening now:
I think the hope is that it can be made from left overs from wood processing and from grasses. Until then they're using corn, which will cost us money in food like beef and chicken because they use the corn as feed for the critters.

Ethanol does have issues and most cars these days can't run on it. The are a lot of E85 cars from GM, Yet it's only a small part of their product line. And there are cars, including the Indy 500 cars, that can handle it quite well. It's really a gasket and lubrication issue as the ethanol will burn just fine in a car engine as long as the ethanol doesn't eat the seals and suck up the oil lubricating oils.

OldBay - and of course you realize that since this is going to hike up many prices for us in the "food" department - that once they do get their act together with this the prices will never come back down! they will stay there - just another way to screw us over (excuse my language)

but they can get away with it - if they can prove that one car engine will rin on it - that is all they have to prove - and I am not looking forward to this - the last time it was h e l l - and cars were in the shop more than anything - all from ethanol

they made us use it for 6 months as some sort of a test - it was not worth it to the public

I know exactly what you mean, I remember when I was a kid and my grandparents would take me to Luby's, I would always get the Jello and it would never have a taste to it.
