Since I was a kid, Mom always just buttered the bread for our grilled cheese. Well, now, after discovering olive oil, I can't imagine eating another buttered grilled cheese.

Olive oil & some peppercorn medley ........ then walmart cheese! Man oh man..........

Speaking of which, are any of you as addicted to walmart cheese as I am? Ya know, the stuff in the black package. That stuff is awesome. Melts better than ANY cheese I've ever used.

Grilled cheese with mozzarella, basil, sliced tomatoe on thick italian bread made with olive oil - it is sooooooooooo good.

Thanks for this post I was thinking about having grilled cheese for dinner tonight and now you have just thought me a new way to make it.
Thanks

Mmmm...both of those sound really good. I'll have to try that. I was thinking that puting oil in the pan would be easier than butter, but I never tried it. I will definately try it next time I have grilled cheese.

#1 - White bread, buttered on all sides, 2 slices of yellow American and a scrambled egg in between.

#2 - Rye bread, buttered on all sides, 2 slices Swiss cheese.

#3 - Bread, buttered on all sides, 2 slices pimiento cheese, ham slice int he middle.

#4 - Raisin and/or cinnamon bread, buttered on all sides, filled with either canned apples or make your own with peeled apple slices, cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg (optional) and raisins (optional) sooked until soft over low/med heat before stuffing bread.

#5 - Split French bread lengthwise - olive oil or dipping sauce slatherd on bread, mozzarella, provolone, fontina, fontinella, asiago - any combo of these - grilled in George Forman grill.

#6 - Plain, dull boring - made with white bread, buttered and velveeta.

I never liked cheese or other milk product.
I have kind of allergy of it. So no experience on these foods.

Oh but the fat in in cheese. I would have to use the reduced fat cheese

yes - putting oil in is SO MUCH easier than trying to spread butter. No ripped bread for the kids *clears her throat* and hubby :D to gripe about.

I always just put a little in the pan, put the bread in and spin it so it'll give it a nice coat, and go through all the bread & do the same. Just make a stack of the bread and get set to go.

Watch your temp when doing this though cuz the oil cooks alot faster than the butter... and any oil on the pan will turn "icky" then you'll have gripers again. LOL

Wow, I thought I could make a great grilled cheese sandwich. I will be trying some of these ideas next time I make one.

I get the Wal-Mart cheese on my WIC and I have to agree, it melts better than any name brand I've had.

I make the plain, old boring grilled cheese sandwiches. I use 2 slices of cheese though. I make the boring ones because I dip mine in tomato soup. Which actually sounds kinda good since it's overcast and rainy today.

I use four slices of cheese, two very small slices on each piece of bread. I also throw in some butter, can't have a good grilled cheese without butter.

kaabi - i thought the same -- until i tried the olive oil... man does it make a difference....

and as far as dipping it in tomato soup, the oil works great cuz it makes it less soggy after being dipped

I love sliced tomatoes in my grilled cheese sandwiches; I use spray oil (Pam, etc.) or my cast iron skillet.

I have never tried the olive oil, but I do love the taste of it in most everything else, so this might be worth a try.

I can't wait till it's cold enough to have grilled cheese and soup all the time. Of course it tastes good anytime but it's especially good on a cold day.

That's true TexasRose... There have been mornings here that have been cool enough to want to turn the heater on, but we never do because the cool weather lasts only about an hour. Then it starts to warm up. I can't believe less than a month ago everyday hit 100+ degrees by noon.

Some hot ham adds to a grilled cheese. I don't think the butter would be so bad as long as you're not eating grilled cheese every day and not using gobs of butter. A little butter for taste along with some nice sharp Cheddar cheese and a lean piece of DAK ham, on whole wheat toast, of course. The tomato sounds good too!

Mmmmm, hot ham and cheese sandwiches are good. I've never had tomatoes on them before, but I love tomatoes so I may just try that the next time I get some.

Wow I never realized all the way to make grilled chesse! I am SO trying one of these tomorrow, I am so hungry now ;)

Yeah, I'm hungry now and I'm supposed to be going to bed--will definitely try some of these ideas esp. the olive oil. Ciao!
