Gift Cards?

Since we are talking about the holidays I was wondering how you guys feel about gift cards. Do you like to get them or do you feel like the giver is just taking the easy way by not shopping for a gift?

I love them, giving them and receiving them:D Like my neice is getting married Nov. 1st and I wanted to get she & hubby a Pier 1 Imports $50.00 gift card so they can pick out what they like! I think that is what I like about them, the receiver can shop for the items they really like best, and since it is a gift card they can be extravagant and pick something they otherwise might not!

Great question, janie!

I always feel kinda cheesy GIVING them, but I personally ALWAYS like GETTING them. So, overall- I think it's kinda safe to presume that others prefer RECEIVING them too. As someone who likes shopping for others, I always perceived it was more personal and sweeter to carefully select and wrap some treasure to give- but all in all- especially for folks who have everything- I think a gift card is the most appreciated- maybe moreso than anything else.

My niece is now 18 and my nephew is 10. I used to always buy them classic children's literatiure and art supplies. They LOVED these. But these days, I know nothing about what is hip or cool for kids their age- so I always do gift cards or cash for them. My sister & her hubby- and my parents? Their houses are FULL of over-flowing excess, so I buy them restaurant gift cards and tape them inside a cheap book or wrap up with their fav bags of chips or cany bars just so I have something to wrap-up, and they seem to like this a lot. Again- I feel kinda cheesy for taking this approach- but I think it's the best way to ensure that they for sure get something they will like.

Gift cards are nice to give to the fussy, kids and teens love them so that they can get what they want, and those who have everything (or so it seems).

I still prefer to give personal gifts to those I buy for - sometimes adding a gift card to it. And I make sure that the gift card I give will still have the same face amount value if they don't use it right away. I never buy a gift card that has "attached fees" to it.

To me it really depends. I do like to get restaurant gift cards as stocking stuffers for Christmas but I also think if you can pair it with some other little more personal thing it's a nicer gift. I will give you an example now of when I don't like gift cards. I used to do a secret santa with about 15 of my friends. Every year we would write down 5 or so things along with our name for the person who drew us to choose from. One year I realized that the list had degenerated to a list of 5 places they would like to recieve a gift card from. This was so silly to me. If everyone wants a gift card than rather than doing a secret santa why don't we just all bring $20 bills and everyone hand theirs to the right. We can be done in a flash.

I agree with you about that one! Secret Santa is so nice and the little gifts are always a surprise.

We did that for years - for 10 days. Each day you brought a little something (dollar stores came in handy for books, puzzles, mugs), homemade candies and cookies, ornaments, etc. and you never knew who your Secret Santa was - and on the 10th day you were handed a nice gift (we would decide on how much to spend for that) and it was so much fun and so pleasant!

I like that idea "Secret Santa" When I do Gift Cards I usually do a personalized small gift to. If someone has a pet, the pet gets a toy. Or if the person into a hobby buy a gift pertaining to a hobby. Cooking gadgets are great extra presents. pot holders, oven MIT's, cookie cutters, cook books, or magazine subscription. Candles are always beautiful. The Holidays will be here!! Cookie :)

If it is a close family member I think a gift card is can be a little impersonal. I got one once from a person on Jons side of the family. Her and her hubby shopped and bought personal gifts for everyone else there but handed me a giftcard.
Im am very easy to buy for. Heck Jon's Dad buys me a sweatshirt every year and a bottle of my favorite bubble bath. I have four of the same sweatshirts in my closet he has given me lol. He is getting a little forgetfull but he tries and thats what counts. I have loved anything and everything I have ever been given except two pairs of jeans my hubby got me once. He was having an 80's slutty looking video girl flashback when he picked these pants out lol. I have never worn those lol.

No way no how lol.
They are those jeans with a little stretchy to them so that they are skin tight. Not gonna happen.

I got the idea for the perfect (and relatively inexpensive) Christmas gift over the weekend!

I was "picnicking" in my truck with a quarter pounder and fries at a nearby park that has a beautiful stone bridge, fish pond, a pair of swans, and a wandering flock of Canadian geese over the weekend- when I spied two different photographers walking around the park snapping photos of couples amongst the colorful Fall foliage. I presumed he was taking pics for a wedding announcement or some such, since both the couples were young and appeared to be ga-ga and oh-so in love!

Well, this got me to thinking...

Long story- short... I got my Dad and his wife, and my sister and her family to the same park next day. We played around for a couple hours and I got MANY great shots!

For Christmas this year- I will give several loose black and white prints to them- plus one enlarged print (11X14) in a lovely frame to all for gifts this year. Found the frames already at "Gordman's" and "Hobby Lobby". E-mailed chosen pictures to Yorkphoto.com and they'll be shipped back to me on studio-quality matte paper within 10 days!

When Jon's Mom left his Dad she took all of the family pics. So a few years ago I borrowed them from her and made copies of all of them for Jons Dad and I used my photo editing programs to take her out of all of them lol.
