Since I work the graveyard shift, I'm at work right now and tonight is my "Friday"... When I leave in a few hours I'm off for my 4-day weekend and won't be back until Thanksgiving night. I'll be doing a big meal for my Mom and a couple of her friends at my place on Sunday... will dine w/ Dad & his wife and my sister & her family on Thursday... and inbetween will do a couple movies and dining out w/ out of state friends who are here visiting... Since I don't currently have the internet at home it'll be several days before I check back in w/ ya'll, so please accept my warmest wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with the love of family & friends, plenty of delicious food- whether you cook it yourself, buy it out, or are a guest at someone else's table... and the opportunity to thank your Creator- regardless of who YOUR version of that Creator is- for the bounty of life's blessings! May your turkey be moist, your jello mold set-up, and the marshmallows on your sweet 'taters be sweet as candy & light as clouds! smiles, winks & hugs- kevin :)

Hope Everyone Enjoyed a Wonderful holiday Week!

Ahhh... it's nice to have it behind us... and nice to be back at Spice Place...

The l'il event last Sunday with my Mom and her guests went really nicely.

I had planned to host my Mom for a quaint l'il turkey dinner on Sunday. When she accepted my invite, she asked if she might in turn invite a couple of friends from the assisted-living facility she lives at. Of course I extended a "the-more-the-merrier" spirit and assured her that room could easily be made at the table!

I baked my pies the night before (pumpkin, pecan and carnberry/eggnog), placed my 7 lb. Butterball turkey breast in the oven the next morning- then made the drive to and from - to pick-up Mom, Lois & Trudy.

When we came back home, as I took the lady's coats, they all remarked on the aroma of the roasting turkey... (I observed Trudy wearing an inside-out velour shirt- and mis-matched socks...) and I seated them all in chairs near the open kitchen so they could watch me rustle-up the vittles at the stove as they sipped hot cider and chatted... (Lois wore a napkin bib-style as she noisily blew her hot cider to cool it, being as lady-like as she knew how... a napkin she would need to change twice more during the meal.)

Like my Mom- Lois & Trudy also suffer mental/emotional impact/impairment, each with their specific whacky quirks and nervous tics... (in case you hadn't guessed from the above...), so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But as it turned out, all women were in very pleasant moods- and all went quite nicely.

Not only were my guests all warm company- but they were fantastically hungry and appreciative of the spread- which is enuf to warm any cook's heart! I've never seen elderly women all put away SO much food! Watching them eat took me back to my days of feeding ravenous oil field workers in Alaska! Their manners were top-notch... the most anti-social thing that occurred was Trudy eating with her mouth wide-open, and Lois noisily stirring scoops of green-bean casserole and corn pudding into a dish of gravy, soup-and-cracker-style...

After eating, chatting, doing our best to play a few rounds of Trviial Pursuit, eating more dessert, then packing-up care packages for each of the women to take back to the living facility- we made the drive back, taking the fun scenic route thru neighborhoods that had already starting decorating with Christmas lights and such...

I cut the engine, took the women inside and escorted all to their apartments. As Mom and I said our goodbyes, she was beaming. I told her she need not try and rub the ruby-lipstick marks from my cheek as I winked and went back to the car. I imagine this was Mom's first hosted dinner-party in years... and I was thrilled to be part of it with her! Now to plan a nice l'il Christmas menu for her next event... :)

Kev~ you are the best!!! I really mean that, you are :)

You made the ladies day, night, year. I wish, very sincerely, more souls were as loving as yours. Having been a social worker for years, I've seen so many lonely and forgotten older persons, mentally disabled, and handicapped persons that pine for family, human interactions especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.

Your actions speak extreme volumes of your true nature, and that alone, minimally, ensures you are a blessed person with a heart that I am sure God himself smiles on you.

I am very happy I am a friend of yours as no doubt everyone here and everywhere you go, share that same sentiment.

Sincerely,

Dianne ~ you're awesome to me, Kev :)

That's wonderful Kevin. I love to take in people at a loose end for the holidays they seem to make it even more memorable. I hope your Christmas is just as pleasant.

Thanks all- these comments are wonderfully warm and make cause for sweet smiles! The truth is- as you all know- it does make one's heart warm to do for others... But the doing for others is totally two-fold. I get back just as much as I give in the kind generosity department! Blessings abound everywhere... and it's especially fulfilling to give them to/get them from folks who might easily otherwise be forgotten... You all know my story- when I was ten years old my Mom took ill and has been impacted for decades from troubling mental illness. This was a burdensome thing for so many years. But we've been lucky enuf to be blessed with an amount of reconciliation and healing from much of it this past year or two- and for that I am grateful.

Oh Kev...your story brought tears to my eyes...When I was 9 yrs old my Mother suffered a total breakdown. I never had a Mom growing up and miss those early years of memories of Mother who passed away on 2000 . What a sweet soul you are !
