Krogers Question

The Krogers I go to always has such a terrible smell around the fish counter. Sometimes it is so bad it will honestly make you gag. I had always read if fish has a fishy smell then do not buy it. I know that if they are cleaning fish in the back there the waste from that could be part of the smell but it is so bad. Is it the same at other Krogers stores? I am afraid to buy any fresh fish from there most of the time. That smell seems to be on all of the fish it is so strong. They sell fresh oysters, clams and the like which I would love to try but Im just afraid to.
Do you shop at a Kroger and how is the fish counter there?

First, talk to a manager. And since I have worked as a fisherman

and a cook, it could just be poor cleaning practices.
Any area that seafood or meat passes through must be scrubbed throughly. We are talking with a brush and bleach water from top to bottom and then every bit of the deck including corners!!!!!!!
Maybe buy a small portion of fish and if it doesn't smell right--hightail it back to the market with it.
But the manager needs to know.
We have a store like that here where the meat dept stinks. I don't eat much meat, so it doesn't matter much, but I stay clear of that end of the store.
Nan

You do need to report them and let the board of health go in there and find out what the problem is. It needs to be done before someone gets sick. Until then - I would not buy any of their seafoods! It's not worth the risk.

The next time we go there I'm going to mention it to the manager. I doubt it will do any good though. I have yet to meet one single person who works at that store who is nice. The deli crew is an exceptionally grouchy bunch. People skills do not seem to be a requirement to work there. I only go there to get some spices and things I cannot find anywhere else.
The store is a couple of counties over from where we live.

If the employees are that bad I wouldn't bother with the manager. I would go to the board of health and then I would email the main headquarters of Krogers and tell them that they need to do something about the situation.

Hey - something has to be done - and then I would send a follow up email - if it is still like that - keep telling them and then tell them that all the emails will be sent to the board of health - then there is proof they aren't taking care of it. This can be a serious thing. Maybe if someone gets sick (which I pray they don't) and Korger's gets sued big time they will do something about it.

They sell sushi made in the deli over by the meat and cheese at that Krogers. I imagine that stinky fish ends up right in that sushi. To me it smells like they are not cleaning the fish area like they should. The display case seems to be where the smell is the worst. I be they are not cleaning it or changing the ice the fish lays on. Is has been so bad in there before that you can smell it on the other side of the store.
I told Jon I had always read that if fish smells fishy don't eat it. They say if you walk in a fish store and it stinks then walk out. That place is the only place around here that sells fresh fish so there is nothing to compare it with.

Sounds like a cleaning problem associated only with that store. We have a Kroger about 65 miles away that I love going to whenever I'm in Bossier City. It has so much stuff that I can't get in my local town.

Fresh fish has no bad fishy smell. I would not buy it. When you email them, be sure and don't forget say. That the employees also need an attitude adjustment. I also would notify the local health department. CF:)

Yeah Janie- it ought to smell fresh and briny like salt water... not fishy at all. I agree w/ w/ what others have said that it sounds like poor cleaning practices. All it takes is not getting one sink or drain cleaned quite thoroughly or one garbage barrel not properly bleached and scoured-out. Or one scrap of shrimp or snapper that flew off the counter and went flying under a cabinet or some such...

One of the most pleasant smells I know of is a nice seafood store or a dock area on a body of salt water in a sea-faring town... it's clean, fresh, pure and just thrilling to my nostrils! :)

Maybe they'll send you a case of shrimp to apologize, Janie! If they do- I'll bring the lemon weges and maybe mama can bring the cocktail sc! :)
