As I look at this pic, Janie all kinds of cheesy "Air Supply" love-songs are running thru my mind! 
Spike probably thinks; "Oh well, I quess this is the only game in town!"
Could be where beagle's came from (a small smooth-haired dog, belonging to a breed with a "white, tan, and black coat and long drooping ears", often used for hunting)
