I just checked out the little Mexican food store here in town the other day and they had a lot of herbs and spices but all the bags were in spanish. I have tried finding a website to tell me what these are with no luck.

Do any of you know much about mexican herbs and spices.
I love to add some more of them to my spice collection but I have no clue what they are and the woman behind the counter was anything but friendly and spoke no english. I recognized some of the things but not much.

I need a list or something of common mexican herbs and spices and the english translation.

There is no English translation for a lot of Mexican herbs and spices. Things like epazote, achiote etc are just what they are in English and Mexican. Epazote has a very unique flavor kind of like motor oil and lemon if I had to describe it. That doesn't sound good but it is. Achiote is a red seed and has a very savory flavor. I don't know that I could describe it except to say that it has umame. Other herbs used alot in Mexico are Mexican oregano, thyme, Mexican cinnamon and cilantro.

Apparently it's polvo de archivo I didn't know they used a lot of sassafras in Mexico. Here try this online translator. I find it very helpful. Free Translation Online
