Did anyone hear about the girl with a Latin accent that applied for a position in an Hawaiian restaurant/bar and was told she would not be hired because she didn't speak "white" - so she is suing.

When my relatives came over and sent their kids to school - the teachers practically beat the english into them. Accents were not allowed.

Now - you can't make a call without hearing Spanish on a recording, you can't get an instruction manual, etc for the same reason - and now our phone bill has spanish on it.

Well - let's see - America is a "melting pot" - so that means that there are quite a few other cultures in this country than just Spanish speaking people.

Even our food labels are english and spanish - so I'm Italian and I would like to see Italian on the labels as well, my best friend is german and she would like to see german, another friend is french and would like to see french on the label, while others would like to see german, gaelic, swedish, russian, polish, etc.

No offense to anyone's nationality - but it is not fair that everything is in english and spanish - so let's just keep it english.

And I am dead-set against schools teaching english as the SECOND language.

Old school thoughts??????

But I agree with the email that has gone around forever - this is America - learn and speak english - love it or leave it.

If my people could do it - everyone else can. It's not hard.

Jon's niece who is fourteen was complaining the other day because she has to take spanish as a second language. She said if she has to take another language she would prefer Italian or French. Spanish was all her school offered.

I remember when my brother was married to the spanish girl. They had their first baby Zoe and the Mama tried to insist she be taught spanish first. I was like uhh..she lives in Kentucky for crying out loud and you are the only other person in town who speaks spanish right now. The kid was at our house most every day so what were we supposed to do all day? I asked if she thought we shouldnt speak to the baby lol. I thought it was so ironic she would want to raise the baby that way when she had told me stories about when she started school in NY and they had to get a translator for her class because she was the only spanish kid in there. She used to tell me about how the kids picked on her for it. The baby spoke english with a spattering of spanish her Mom was teaching her on the side.
I havent seen her since she was 3 years old. I dont even know where she is. She would be about 15 now.

It is funny because in this town you can tell some people are very prejudice. Where I have black hair and dark skin and very dark eyes some people think I am mexican. I stopped at a convenience store one day and there were 4-5 rednecks in there who started talking about what they thought about mexicans when I came in  It didnt dawn on me til I was in the car what had happened. Rednecks with not a single IQ point between them. My grandmothers on my Dads side were full blooded Indian and there are black dutch in the family along with irish. Everyone on Dads side is either dark skinned with dark hair and eyes or red haired, fair skinned and blue eyes. It is crazy lol. A few get black hair and blue eyes which is georgeous. I never cared much about who was in the family tree. Honestly with my family I would be afraid of what I would find lol.

Isn't it amazing - our kids go to schools and they don't even have the money for textbooks anymore - so there is nothing to bring home and study. All work is given on paper - copied from a book the teacher has. But yet - they will pay for a translator for ONE student!

There are many programs out there that teach English, reading, etc. - but a private tutor?

I live in a heavy concentration of Yemen/Arabic and of course - they are being forced into learning SPANISH in school - which is hysterical!

Listen to the way people speak to each other today - proper English is right down the tubes. Our society has resorted to third-rate English - no one understands nouns, pronouns, the proper way to put a sentence together, how to spell - it's sick.

And all this internet lingo is making matters worse. Kids today can text - but they can't write a book report or a composition. Most of them have pathetic penmanship as well.

They don't add or substract anymore either - they can use their calculators.

You need to be bi-ligual to get a job.

America is gone.

doesn't anyone see what is happening?

by the way - just WHAT are they teaching kids today anyway? sure ain't spelling, math, history, etc.

Mama, they teach kids important things like how to contact planned parenthood, Division Of Youth And Family Services and how to put condoms on bananas.

IC - I see (excuse the pun)
You're right - they have to teach that - if they were to teach REAL subjects with REAL work and responsibilities some parent groups would scream discrimination and say that their kids don't have a life anymore because of the workload!
and if their kids get pregnant or catch an STD - that would most likely be the schools fault - not the parents.
and to expect any respect - OMG - in our day we feared our teachers - today they have to be our friends - or better yet - they have to sleep with their students -
how silly of me...............

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
