We have 8 microwaves in our kitchen. They are running almost constantly when we are busy. We have an "all you can eat" dessert bar that goes with our meals. During this summers "heat wave"...I tried actual "baking" in mine.
I have now got "muffins" and "cakes" down pretty well. There is a slight difference in texture...but none of our customers have commented on the change...so they must be ok! Anything you're interested in doing...let me know...I would be glad to help!

My father in law used to sell and repair microwaves (when they were expensive) and serviced them afterward for commercial businesses. He can cook a complete meal in a microwave and it tasted quite good.
All I can do is defrost food, and I'm not too good at that. My wife is pretty good at the microwave. But we dont' really cook in it. She'll make some rice casseroles and other side dishes in the microwave, but not the main dishes her dad does.

I use the microwave for lots of things. It is especially handy for defrosting food, melting butter, cooking popcorn, oatmeal, side dishes such as rice and sauce, scrambled eggs, etc. It is especially nice for cooking bacon for all the reasons already mentioned. It also is great to heat the food for our dogs and cats (yes, they all are spoiled). Baked potatoes come out perfectly cooked. About the only food I do not cook in the microwave is meat such as steaks, roasts, chicken, etc.
