Medical Values of Chile Peppers


Chile peppers may have many more health benefits than once thought. There have been many studies that have investigated the benefits and harms of consuming foods containing hot peppers. There have been many interesting findings regarding capsaicin ( the substance that makes peppers hot).

When the body takes in capsaicin it reacts to it in a way that increases circulation throughout the body. This increased blood flow has many medical benefits. It enhances the production of protective juices in the stomach, intestines, and lungs making those organs more resistant to injury and infection. The increased blood volume helps to keep the blood vessels clear and also nourishes the heart.
Capsaicin also exhibits anti-clotting properties. Studies have shown that a number of cultures such as Thai, Indian, and Korean whose daily diet includes chilies have a lower incidence of Thromboembolism ( blood clots that cause stroke and heart attacks).
The British Medical Journal reported a study where ulcers were healed when red peppers were consumed on a regular basis. The Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer showed that capsaicin may even have cancer-blocking properties.
When applied externally it is a very effective local pain reliever. It is the ingredient in many over-the-counter arthritis medications. Capsaicins in chiles have been used topically to the pain of shingles, toothaches, and surgery scars.

I love jalapenos. I just have to take out the seeds and membrane or they are to hot for me. Im crazy about the flavor though.
 
First of all, Pepperman, welcome to the list.

Obviously, you are passionate about chilis. But please don't keep cross-posting, because rather than teaching people you just bore them by the repitition.

Question: Not about capcaisin, because I agree with everything you say. But about relating it just to Jalapenos. Personally, I've never understood why they became so popular.

If you take the heat away from jals all you're merely left with a sort of green taste. Like a bell pepper with no sugar. Even ripe jalapenos barely improve in underlying flavor. And probably 99% of the population has never seen a ripe jalapeno.

Compare this to hundreds of other choices. Even among C. annuum there are numerous others that have great taste. Even Serrano, in my opinion, has more flavor.

When we leave the C. annuums we can really enter a world of flavor. Take the heat about from C. chinense, for instance, and you're left with a smoky, tropical fruit flavor. With C. baccatum there's a citrusy underflavor.

There are two big user groups of chilis. Chileheads, who are only interested in the burn, so they can get an endorphin rush, and culinarians, who are interested in flavor as well as heat.

I'm a member of the second group. As a result, it is rare that I use jalapenos for anything.

My intent wasn't to confuse anyone, I posted a recipe in the desert forum and wanted to clear up the comment about the acid reflux. I thought it would be helpful information to others in the forum. That's why I posted it in the questions forum. Sorry if I confused anyone, as for jalapeno peppers being a quality food, I don't care for the pickled, or raw peppers. Before drawing conclusions, The peppers takes a dramatic turn when seared quickly, Very sweet, no it's not very hot, however you can add into your fillings, the ingredients to add heat,

Acid Reflux affects people differently. I have suffered for years with a severe case. It has been my experience whenever I eat any type peppers hot or not I have flare ups. Some acidic foods also...but Tomatoes don't bother me as bad as peppers. Go figure....lol...
