Deep Fat Fryer

I need to replace my current deep fat fryer with a new one and was wondering if anyone could recommend a top of the line brand.

What kind of fryer do you have now and what kinds of foods are you cooking? What volume do you need (are you cooking lots of food in the fryer)? There's anything from the small Fry Daddy to the larger T-Fals. What fryer to recommend, depends on your needs.

Generally, we like our T-Fal fryer because it cooks the food with a closed lid including a filter to keep the oils from coating the kitchen. And it's cool to the touch on the outside. The Fry Daddy's are ok if you're cooking french fries, or onion rings. But for fried chicken or more than occasional use, we'd recommend the T-Fal.

Thanks for the reply Spice Place. We use our deep fat fryer to fry french fries and onion rings as well as an occasional fried chicken recipe. We will definitely check out the T-Fal one that you mentioned.

Hey DrPepper!
Here's a link to the T-fal fryer we have. The site says it retails for about $80.00 USD but you can get it on sale for less. It's a nice fryer. We like it that it cooks closed and has a filter. Plus a little light that comes on when the temperature is ready.

These are much better then trying to cook in a frying pan. I always worry about all of that hot oil catching fire or spilling. The T-fal is quite stable, and temperature controlled.

Good luck on your fryer quest.

I finally found some time to check out the T-Fal Deep Fryer you suggested. I really like the features on the T-Fal Avante Deluxe Deep Fryer. This deep fryer also is easier to clean than the one I currently own. It has a viewing window which allows one to check if the food is done. My current deep fryer I have to actually lift the lid which affects the temperature of oil each time you open the lid. I did some research and found that I can purchase it for $70 at Target.

I need to pick up one of these. One problem with frying is the spatter and general mess it makes of your kitchen. It seems that with an enclosed appliance like this, you would have less of a mess and hopefully the food would cook more evenly as well.

I'm off to add it to my Amazon wish list.

TexasRose you are right about there being less mess with the enclosed deep fat fryers compared to frying food in oil in a regular fry pan. This is especially true with a good deep fat fryer such as the T-Fal brand because they come with their own replaceable filters on the top of the lid.

The food does cook more evenly as long as you make sure to have the proper level of oil in the deep fat fryer and you don't overload the fry basket. All food should always be complete submerged in the oil when cooking. It also helps to start cooking the food for a couple of minutes and then lift the basket out of the oil and give the food in the basket a good shake and then lower the basket of food back in the oil to finish cooking. Shaking works extremely well for french fries, onion rings, etc. it keeps them from sticking together.

Man, I would love to have one of those, but I thought only fast-food restaurants had them. I thought they were extremely expensive, but I guess they're not.

walmart has some different brands, for about 1/2 price. I got my GE one there for about 35.00, and it's just like a fast food one. and uses a lot less oil than old styles. The cord is magnetic, pretty cool feature. and it's cool to the touch, never hot.
best of luck

My advice is figure out which one you want and then go look for it on ebay!

I thought deep fat fryers were a fire hazard? In any case, I wouldn't ever buy one b/c we don't do a lot of frying of foods.

That do not make good foods also. And thats hard to cook with also.
So i dont like that.

Also, Presto has some nice ones.

But it all depends on what you're looking for; Small, large, lots of bells & whistles, no frills, fancy, plain, etc.. For Presto's product, go here; Presto® Pressure Cookers and Electric Appliances .

You'll have to shop around to see just exactly what's out there. Also, if you have just a 5-qt or 7-qt covered cast iron Dutch Oven for now, that'll do nicely as well.
