How do you get avacados ripe?

Avocados were onsale for a really good price and I bought 4. However, they are unripe. Is there a better way than the paper bag idea to get them ripe? i love avocados and would love to make a salad with them this weekend.

My way to ripen avocados is to set them on the kitchen counter and wait a day or two until they feel soft. Sometimes you can find avocados in the store already ripened, but that's rare.

I too enjoy avocados in salads. I cut them about cucumber slice sized, and mix them into the tossed salad gently.

I try to keep them in direct sunlight for a day or two, or until they are ripe.

I have heard that the direct sunlight helps. I am doing the right now and they feel alittle bit softer. I am hoping to use them tomorrow in a taco salad.

I've always just left the avocados in a plastic sack on the counter and the avocados ripened fine without direct sunlight. Direct sun could help, just I haven't even done it.

Well I left them on the counter in front of the kitchen window. they got to be really ripe and were good to eat. Thanks for all the advice.

Great! I'm glad it worked for you. ....just a little tid bit; I love to put roasted red peppers in with my avacados (guacamole).

I have never had roasted red peppers. i will have to try that next time. i usually just put tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos.

Maybe it can also be put in the rice container just like the unripe mangoes. I love avocados in the summer especially as a dessert drink.

We place the fruit, not just avocado but any fruit that needs ripening, in a rice container too. I don't know the scientific explanation for this but it works.

The plastic or paper bag helps a little bit and putting them in direct sun does help ripen some vegetables like tomato. Ripening avocados or any fruit/vegetable just takes time and patience.

Ive always been told to ripen any fruit to put it next to bananas. Apparentally the bananas emit chemicals or something that helps to ripen fruit :)

I think Im gonna try that one. We always have bananas in the house and I might try putting unripe mango next to it. :)

How do you know when they're ripe? Just give a little squeeze & feel for softness? I've never used fresh avocado, so I'm clueless!

I know this is an old post but here are some tips you may find useful.

Ripen the avocado by leaving it on the counter top. Depending on how young it is - it'll take a day or two.

To check for ripeness, we shake the avocado. If you can feel the pit move inside, then it's ripe. This will be firmer. Waiting for it to be soft tends to make it mushy.

To take out the pit, hold the avocado lengthwise the palm of your hand, then tap the pit with your knife. Give it a turn then pull.

Slice the fruit in the peel, then scoop it using a large ladle. No messy hands.

Hmmm. What is it with me and avocado? This is my 4th post, and the third was about avocado too. Just my luck.

In commercial kitchens we always had huge, wheeled flour-bins that were stored in the pastry kitchen- usually near hot ovens. We would take whole un-ripe avocados and place them far down within the deep, warm flour and usually by next day they were magically ripe and perfect for eating!

In the Philippines, if you want to ripen fruits, we put them in the rice bins. Since rice is a staple here, it's be best place to ripen fruits. I think it's the warmth of the grains or the flour that ripens them.

The very best avacados were in Miami where I grew up and we only plucked them off the tree after they were ripe! We did not have the Hass Avacados rather the Lerge smooth skinned variety, and they were so delicious! If one fell off tree before ripening a brown bag was our most reliable way. I now use IC's method of the microwave, sounds neat that there are so many ways to ripen them:) I miss tree ripened avacados so much...........
