Low salt food

I need to know where to find this low salt food where at in the grocery store and what stores would carry this? Plus name some foods for me would help out alot also.

Just about any grocery store should have no-sodium vegetables, even store-brands come that way. I know Campbell's soup has a line of low-sodium soups that they are slowly expanding to include their more popular flavors like tomato, cream of chicken (that's the one I got this weekend), and several other. The low sodium varieties are usually shelved with the regular options. Just look close at the labels, I've noticed that the low-sodium varieties are a shelf or two down or up from the normal varieties.

OK thanks so much for all your help.

Like I said in the post in an earlier thread - grab that book Complete Food Counts by Corrine Netzger - it will tell you everything and that should get you started!

OK thanks his dr. is sending us to a diabetic clinic to teach us how to feed him. he does not have diabetic but he has to eat like he does to control his insulian.

oh good, I'm glad. That will be a great help. I've been looking at sodium content a lot in the past few days because of your posts and I am shocked at how crazy high the sodium levels are in SO much food.

There isn't a specific 'low/no sodium' section - you just have to get really good about reading labels. And yu'll probably have to give up a lot of pre-prepared foods b/c those inevitably are pretty high in sodium.

yes I know this part is killing me because I use alot of stuff like taco seasoning loaded with salt all caned food is really bad. lunch meat is terrible what do you do?

you may want to try this:

Salt Free Taco Seasoning

Salt-Free alternative to the envelope mix. good for seasoning taco meat, burrito meat, meat loaf. Also good sprinkled over cottage cheese, or mixed into sour cream for a dip. Add according to taste preference.

6 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon white pepper

1. Put all ingredients in a labeled (Salt-free-taco) sandwich size zip lock plastic bag.
2. Seal and shake.
3. Shake before using.

Unfortunately - salt is in everything processed - that is how the foods get their flavors. You may need to switch to homemade cooking. Frozen and fresh veggies are better than canned. Same with fruits.

I use to think that the low sodium have some green label to them..do they?

I am not on a salt free diet, but this is a great recipe. Thanks so much.

I'm kinda stuck in the middle here... My blood pressure's a little on the high side, so I need to cut down on my sodium while pregnant. But the dr says I can't completely eliminate it because the baby still needs some sodium. So I'm stuck...

I think that if you really want low salt foods then you need to make the food yourself and toss the salt shaker out the window. Salt is so widely used as the 'no-preservatives-added' preservative that you'll never really get mass produced food without salt. Just my thoughts ...

But you don't need the 3000+ mg of sodium we eat in our diet these days. I'm not a nutritionist or anything, but if you eat ketchup, canned vegetables, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, etc, then you're getting more then enough sodium in your diet for healthy living. Probably the main key word from your doctor is 'some'.

Yeah I agree. I would make everything from scratch, and skimp on the salt. Making everything yourself in the only way you know whats in your food.
