Double-Dipping during the Holidays

Just in time for the holiday gathering and lots of appetizers and dips to enjoy, I thought I would pass on a little something "extra" for those that love to double-dip, or get caught at doing it.

Double-dipping, for the uninitiated, is the act of dipping a chip into the dip, taking a bite and then dipping what remains of that chip back into the dip -- double-dipping. And there are a few people who are triple-dippers.

The question is....are bacteria/germs passed to the dip or is it safe? Check out the video for the answer:

Food Detectives Double Dipping Video - Food2

I love dips - we all do - and when I serve dips I also serve little individual dip containers that can be refilled with the spoons from the big dip bowl - ditto with spreads which I serve with little spreaders - so if they lick the spreader or stick it in their mouth, they don't contaminate everyone else.

Then you can double dip all you want!

I saw that episode of Food Detectives. Yuck.
I think they covered how contaminated those bowls of pretzels and nuts are in bars in the same episode.

Shelley - you sound like me - something like that I cannot watch - the tummy can't take it. And I don't want the lasting memories! LOL

If it is me & my family I do not mind one bit if they want to double dip at home, we all live in such close proximity to one another, and as long as it is all eaten up and not used again who cares! I love my family and their germs do not scare or bother me one bit!!! I think because of "stinkin TV" we are all becoming "germaphobes". I am not against being clean and sanitary, (wash my hands so much at work they crack & bleed; I handle money) but at home and around my loved ones I refuse to be a germaphobe! If one of the members of my family is sick, I would give them a plate with their own dip on it, just to be on the safe side, if everyone is healthy, who cares...NOT ME!

In public or at a social function I instruct them not do do so, but to grab a plate! Good manners and good hygiene!:)

That's fine within your own family since you are exposed to the same germs/bacteria and most will build up an immunity to those. You may not be so lucky when you go to someone else's home, store, etc., and get exposed to different germs/bacteria.

Unfortunately not everyone has a "healthy" immune system.

I know and that is sad! I work with a poor girl who gets everything, and her kids are constantly sick, and have to have ear tube surgery all the time over & over again. I think their gene pool is not blessed with good immune systems, because it is not only her but her sister as well, and she has no children, but she is sick all the time too. Both my friend and her sister are not even 30 yet and both have had their gall bladders out! They can not eat like everyone else because of the surgery. How sad!

I do teach the little ones that it is different away from the house. And especially at school they have to be so careful, even with their coats and hats etc. so they do not catch hair lice! It is totally different away from home!

I don't think of it as being a germaphobe. I look at it as being respectful to others. My mother in law and her second hubby buy bottled water and save the bottles refilling them from their filtered tap water. They offer them to people who come in constantly. Jon and I never take those. Before we go there we always take something to drink with us. I dont mind eating or drinking after my husband but thats it. I would never want to eat after his chain smoking brother has double dipped or someone with a mouth full of plaque covered teeth. Gross! My immune system is pathetic and Jon has a lot of scar tissue on his lungs from his car accident years ago. Especially with it being flu season you have to be careful.
