I never realized what a piece of crud that old stove was I had before. The new oven bakes so much better. Before when I baked brownies they always cooked from the outside first then to the middle of the pan. Now they bake evenly all over and come out wonderfully.
This happened to me years ago when I first started cooking. Broiling a steak in an old stove (rented apt) and everything on the bottom of the oven caught fire along with the steak. I freaked, grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out. Some time later I watched a video on some govt website about what to do when this happens in the oven. All it said was to turn the power off to the oven, close the door, and let it burn out lol.
Ovens I guess are designed with this in mind and can more than handle the heat. Still, it is a bit unnerving to have a real fire in your kitchen lol.. From that day forward, I made sure that I cleaned my oven regularly. And after all these years of having cheap ovens, we finally got a new one with a self cleaning cycle, man, does that make life easier!

Last night my stove caught on fire when I ran the self cleaning option. I was spring cleaning my whole kitchen and I was doing my refrigerator and I had all my food out on the counters while my stove was cleaning. To my surprise I look over and there is a fire burning inside my oven. I didn't know what to do because when it is on self clean it goes up to about 1000 degrees. That's what the fire chief told me after I had called 911 because the door locks once it hits 500 degrees. I def think that stoves are meant to handle that kind of stuff because right after the fire had started it went out. There was a little bit of soot around the door but no damage thank god! But be careful when using the self clean option because you need to make sure you do a scrub first than let the oven melt off the rest!
